India has so many names becoz it's a country having a history more than 5000 years old. Over the period, significant development happened and accordingly, the land got different names.

To start with, Bharat or Bharatvarsha: it's named after the King Bharata. He was the first king to conquer all of Greater India, uniting it into a single entity which was named after him as BharÄtavarsa.

Then India : The term is derived from the name of the Sindhu (Indus River) and has been in use in Greek since Plutarchus[1] (1st century AD). The term appears in Old English in the 9th century, and again in Modern English since the 17th century.

Lastly Hindustaan :
Hindustan is used by the masses of India and by Pakistanis and other Muslim nationals and is mostly used in historical contexts (especially British India).

Hi there !
India is a vast and beautiful country with wide variety of culture and many languages.
So for every one word, there will be different pronouncations, and words, based on different localities.
That explains the reason why so many other words are used for the word "India" !

india is great and greatness has many names...

Mypower
Because of its cultural heritage!!!!!!!
Its called Bhaarat bacause once upon a time it has been ruled by a king called Bharata(younger brother of Rama) and Hindustan because of the vast majority of Hindus living in India.........

veeru
Long long ago India led by king barathudu, on his name India named Bharat, in India basically Hindus are mejarity people, so that it's named Hindustan, finally the name "India " created the Britishers , when they seen this land first time, its look like Indiana Island.

I think you should study History...............
