Actually, thats just a marketing gimmick aimed at promoting tourism. It was originally coined by the State Tourism Department.

National Geographic has named Kerala as 'one of the 50 most beautiful places on earth'.

Back home, we Keralites(natives of Kerala) fondly call it Dogs' Own Country. A 15 year old female Swedish tourist was recently groped and molested by Keralites in Kochi, one of the principal cities of the state of Kerala during the New Year celebrations. A security guard molested two Canadian minor girls, aged 12 and 13, at a resort in Kumarakom only the other day.

Santhosh M has written further down this column that the problems highlighted are present in any place that you would visit. I disagree. Sexual perverts are present in any place that one would visit?? Santhosh M, where on earth did you get that info from? Perhaps you re one who shares the same twisted thinking and logic with those Keralite sexual perverts that you have lost your ability to think rationally, being a 'proud Keralite' yourself, as you mentioned.

Kerala is a land blessed with natural beauty and well-known for its ancient history. There are lot of spots out there that have been untouched by mankind, and still basking in the natural glory. Further, Kerala boasts of different cultures/religions and is well known for its various festivals. The political capital is Thiruvanathapuram, but Thrissur is called its cultural capital. Thrissur is well known for its various festivals, the most famous being the Pooram. Various dieties are taken around the city in procession during these festivals. These are some of the reasons for calling Kerala "God's own country". The problems that certain people have highlighted here are present in any place that you visit. If you are looking for a quiet, relaxing but a very invogorating time off, surely it is a place to include in your itinerary. Good luck, folks !

It is just backwaters and beautifully peaceful. Green too. With the Western Ghats on one side and the Arabian Ocean on the other.

Because kerela is a nice & pleasent place to live.full of green garden it will make as to forgot all our worries.the climate also too good.it will make a good condition so our heart feel very light.so only kerela was consider as god own country.even-though god where in each & every thing in this world.kerela is a wonderful place so only they said like that........

IT IS CALLED SO MAINLY COZ IT IS A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND THE NATURAL BEAUTY IS VERY MUCH. THE WEATHER IS VERY PLEASANT THERE AND PEOPLE THERE ARE ALSO TOO RELIGIOUS. THEY HAVE A STAUNCH BELIEF IN GOD. THE CLEANLINESS IN THAT STATE IS VERY MUCH.

Two reasons.

1. Mythology- Kerala is believed to be created by Parshuram when he threw his stone from the north to southwards. He created this place to have a safe place for brahmins after he killed almost all the kshatriyas. Since it was created for the god fearing brahmins, it got name Gods own country.

2. Kerala is a place where you will find almost all religions in this world. It has always been open to new ideologies (includes even communism) and are pretty sincere in the beliefs. Probably this too is a reason for the name "Gods own country".

Kerala is first called Gods Own Country by a advertisement group which tagged "Gods Own Country".since then,as the state itself is very clean,calm and greenery people call it the above!
