Kolkata was described as a City of Joy in a novel by the French writer Dominique Lapierre, and a movie with the same name was also produced. It was directed by Roland Joffe.

It was Anandnagar (City of Joy) in the Novel, a Howrah slum (across the Hooghly river from Kolkata. Despite the abject poverty and injustice, the inhabitants of Anandnagar display an inscrutable acceptance and celebration of life - an attitude that humbles fate and dignifies life.

And hence the name City of Joy

Swapan, the Dream
Sandip is absolutely right. Good answer.

Also the Bengalis are mostly cheerful in spite of hundreds of problems. We always like to criticize, chitchatting, eat delicious food, enjoy and enjoy. Not much worry for unknown future.
