I think that many westerners find India exotic and cultural. Those who find India 'disgusting' are the once who are afraid of facing reality.....poverty in the world!
India and Indians have a lot to offer the world but unfortunately, things are not ORGANISED as it is in the western world. There are a lot of corruptions and obviously, "cultural differences" (such as manners and religious rituals) that folks from more industrialised nations fail to understand.
India is a 'Third World' country and, has come a long way. In the last 10 years there are more advancement in countries like India and China than some western nations if you really analyse things.
Yes, India has come a long way....and, will get more advanced before we can blink!

You are right, people who travel to India mostly Westerns are disgusted at Indians. Because Indians seems to make more of their poverty by highlighting it rather than do something about it. They have screamed their guts out at the public administration and nothing can be done about it. Tourism is a better option to fill their coffers because they will not get jobs anywhere! Western cultures and they influences have eroded our lifestyles and our values. Thousands of years ago, Westerns would not have found such a situation in our country, because there was no povery, even if there was the village and community supported such individuals. 400 + years of being ruled and dominated have depleted our resources. What you see today is a country raped by Westerners, and the polity of the country. Our laws do not permit us to take anyone to task. WE cannot hold anyone accountable who has failed to perform his public duty. The civic administration is protected by immunity clause which helps them get away. Such is our situation. But things will change. Next time you visit India, keep in mind this situation. However there is one thing that has not changed and that is the friendly nature of the Indians. The above situations have toughened our lives to make us individuals who continue to move on despite the worst tragedy.

I do not see why people should be disgusted when they tavel to India, is it because Indians dont have a voice to reply to that question?

I have traveled to many countries in the World and do not say those words, every country has its good side and bad side. As a guest of that country I do not have a right to say anything, it is for the local people to see what is wrong with their country and do something about it. Obviously in case of India, ordinary citizens cannot do anything, too many babus sitting having tea breaks.

People who travel to India do not look at the good side, its culture, heritage etc, only bad things, they have blinkers on their eyes, like horses and see only what can or want to.

Uhm - you really should elaborate here.

They find disgusted "WHAT"?

Or do they find what they see disgusting?

That last one is cultural. western society likes clean, sterile almost, environments. India is all but that.
Also, poverty and such is much more visible in countries like india, than in western countries. (It is there, but better hidden)

I feel that the westerners see things as black and white and not grey. And instead of understanding or analysing a situation , they tend to repeat the word or learn it VERBATIM.
You have to understand that you are not used to looking at so many people at the same place and at the same time as in India. India is crowded. Tourists are sometimes cheated by some cab drivers or shop-keepers etc over prices, but that should not come as a surprise to somebody in USA cos their own people are cheating and robbing them of money all the time through this or that lame excuse. Westerners also feel that Indians do not have a sense of privacy. With India's great numbers, you cant expect the same privacy in India.

In fact, some notions prevail on the Indian side too. Westerners are often looked upon as sex or drug addicts and therefore may fail to get police or public sympathy at times.

Despite all this, it is the people of India who are the country's biggest assets. In no other country will anybody ever find more colourful, full of life and nice at heart people in the world!! India is not a place to see, it is a place to experience. I personally know of some people who have had some great experiences in the country whether it was through a meditation camp or a visit to an Indian village, or just being a part of 'the crowd' .

because of a general lack of facilities. Shortage of hotel rooms, transport facilties are still primitive and crowded, the seat capacity offered is inadequate, the roads are bad, food and drinking water is generally not easily available. The climate is hot and dusty and over populated.
It is really a challenge to enjoy your stay in India, but why disgusted ?

Perhaps beggars and some unhygienic environment in some places. This is the repellant not only in India but even in many countries except some.

Unlike the Westerners, the Indians do not kiss & hug in public.

my friend went there and saw a dead baby carried by a little girl asking people for money. then i told my Indian co-worker about that and she said that syndicates try to force abandoned kids to beg for money on the streets and give the money to the syndicate later. SO sad.

Because there are "no citizens" in India.
There are only "people living" in India.
