Would it be wise to wear a sari in India?

I don't want to look like a silly, American tourist and attract harassment wearing a tshirt and jeans. And, I think wearing a sari would be fun while there! This would avoid problems, wouldn't it?

I would do it. I love to dress up as people of other cultures and really, it shows your admiration and respect for the culture

In India everyone is encouraged to wear Saree. People will be happy by seeing you wearing Saree

You can wear whatever you want in India, as long as it is decent. No one is going to harass you here for weraing a Jean, or any other western outfit. You can just be your own in India and enjoy our country. You will defenitely have a nice time in India and of course you can try a saree too.

Welcome to India! You will love India.

saari would be a problem for you. You can go ahead with the salwaar kameez . its easy to get along with.

While your idea of wearing a saree is commendable, I think you have to be told about the consequences of this. Saree is a 5 meter long cloth which is available in different material and colour and designs. Before wearing a Saree you have to get a matching underskirt which should touch your ankles as the Saree is fixed on this. To wear the Saree properly you always need a help being a foreigner or until you get used to it. A matching blouse is a must. It has to be stiched in a way that it should stick to the body when you wear it. India has extreme climates and a person who is not accustomed to this type of wear, may find it difficult to move around. Wearing a Saree it is difficult to walk fast, run and it becomes all the more difficult if you had the rain. A lady in a Saree will look very good if she wears matching bangles and other ornaments too. The hair style should also be matching the Saree. For a tourist, I think it will be very difficult to adhere to this. So what I suggest, you wear a churidhar-kurta, instead of Saree, which will be give enough freedom while on the move. I also suggest you speak to some of the Indian women friends before you actually undertake your travel. All the best for your Indian trip.

Welcome to India!!

I think u are heading for a major surprise..No doubt Saree is our traditional dress but if u are not well versed with it..Please don't wear it as it will be very difficult to manage it and travel wearing this. a matter of fact mostly all females wear salwar-kurta, suits, jeans& tops here as they are more comfortable while site-seeing.
If u are coming for an occasion like marriage etc , Saree is an excellent choice but as tourist I will advise u to wear long skirts with kurtis with a shawl, jackets or cardigans(as winters are approaching), salwar-kuta s are just fine, whereas don't hesitate wearing tops and jeans as majority of females wear it here as its trendy and easy.
As far as harassments and problems are concerned, wearing Saree will attract more. Firstly u will not be able to manage it, secondly u will be singled out easily and most importantingle they will realise that u have very less idea of travelling in India.
So i would advise u to wear simple suits or long skirts while travelling. U should try Sarees in evenings in dinner or an occasion.
have a nice trip!!

Wearing a sari in India may be FUN for you, but please learn and practice wearing a sari. It's bit tricky to drape a sari properly and more difficult to carry it on while you walk, move around et al. But yes it's a great way to dress yourself sensually.

But you will find many women wearing a more suitable dress - punjabi suit - comprising a top ( kurta ) and lehenga or salwar. It's easier to carry and proper wear. Think of this option too.

Ofcourse, why you will attract harassment while wearing a tshirt and jeans, I can't understand. Nowadays in all towns and cities, you may come across women in such an attire. Most of the college going girls do favour this dress. You may be bit out of place only when you visit small villages or rural areas but I don't think you will look silly. Ofcourse in many parts of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar, it is wiser to be conservatively dressed. But if you are sticking to the well known tourist points, jeans should not be a problem.

Wishing you happy days in India.

saari is an indian national dress for the women. many foregners do wear sari in India. but be sure that you are able to walk in it. before going out somewhere u must try to walk in sari as u might fell because u are not habitual of wearing of such dresses.

Oh you are sadly mistaken...probably you will look silly wearing a sari !! India is quite advanced and you will find numerous women wearing low waist jeans and body hugging t-shirts, and singlets, and short skirts etc. Yeah, surely if you going down rural its preferable you wear a sari....even an indian wearing jeans and T-sgirt in rural india would get some awkward looks from the people out there

Sari is very difficult to wear and difficult to manage for someone who is normally dressed in tshirt and jeans. Wearing a salwar kameez is much more easier. Its just like like a knee lenght shirt and baggy pants. In the Indian metropolitan cities you will not look silly in t shirt and jeans.Infact many ladies are in such western wear these days. But you might attract harrarsement in such attire if you go to the smaller towns and villages.

Please wear saree during special vacation. Daily u can wear jeans. Indian girls do prefer jeans than saree. But If you wear sari people would love it. I dont think so it'll be comfortable to you. Cos its u may very difficult to walk. You can wear some other ladies Indian enthic wear like suit, chudidhars. All those u can get in US. Ask any Indian near to you. He/She would help you.

hope this would help you

Wearing Saris will definitly attract some....It will be like rain in the desert.. Most of the foreing travellers here in India prefer churidars,Salwar kamise etc.. Very few wear Saris when they are here... So as i told in the other question of urs if going to Northern India go with Salwar Kamies,,,,and in the southern regions go with Saris...AND BEFORE TRYING ON A SARI ON THE STREETS BE EXTRA TRAINED IN PUTTING IT ON .....there are different styles to put on a sari so ask some one to show u the most common type....
HAVE A FUN TRIP....

I think you'd look silly IF you looked like a typical American.

I doubt you'll get harrassed in India for wearing a t-shirt and jeans.

Saari will keep you safe from many problems. You will love to wear saari. Nowadays you can wear handloom both cotton and silk. Winter is imminent. Use shawls. Sweater will be necessary in november third week onwards.
