Y is it that when someone asks where to go in India for vacations.... everybody says Goa??????

Perhaps you have been receiving skewed opinion. The states of Kerala and UP in India also attract a huge number of tourists, and subsequent referrals. However, undoubtedly Goa is a prime destination in India inspite of its perceieved similarity to several exotic locations the world over. There are several reasons for the same. I shall try & explain them.

1. Variety of options: Within an hour's drive, you can visit locations ranging from beaches to lush green surrounds. That is sort of unavailable is other locations in India. And the best part is that these locations are prserved well.

2. Similarity in culture: Several people tour locations in the world that display similarity to their culture, as strange as it might seem. In fact several people search for hours to find a restaurant that offers familiar cuisine. Tourists from abroad probably look to visit an India, but with a flavour of their culture. This will not be possible in places other than Goa, in India.

3. Freedom: People seek to enjoy sans restrictions. There being enormous cultural differences between the western world and most of India, several practices common in the west are disallowed/looked down upon in most of India. Goa offers an opportunity to enjoy without the restrictions.

4. Marketing: How well a place is known depends on how well it is marketed. Till recently, most states were unaware of the potential of tourism. Goa on the other hand has been marketing itself for quite long. So soon you will hear about other locations as well!

Pondichery and its churches, streets-everything is wonderful, there are other places too like rajasthan(my place though i liv in mangalore), i agree, maybe becoz people think foreigners feel at hme there, but why would the want to come to india then??i guess we need to show our countries ethnicity by promoting all states like orissa, pondicherry(not a satte), karnatajka, etc,etc.

Goa huh ....if ull ask me where to visit in INDIA i'll say go to jammu n kashmir ..........its heaven and if ull not see heaven there is hell too there .......da hell boys ......terriorists

Goa has its charm but it's not a real India. Every state has something amazing to offer tourists. It's just that most tourists coming to India don't know anything about its culture, history...simply not interested. And a lot of places don't say anything to them. Goa is well-promoted, so they go there just to relax on the beach. Even if they go to, say, Khajuraho - what will they see? Oh, wow, erotic statues! That's it. Do they know who are Shiva and Parvati and the origin and history of these temples?
Anyway, people are free to make their choices. If Goa according to them is the best place in India - worse for them.

It depends who is answering?
In Western culture the Beach culture is consider as a holiday destination for fun and joy. So every body says GOA as European or western peoplr wants to be at beach culture.
But if some one really wanna enjoy the vacations in fruitful manner one has to discover the culture, art and religion of that country.
Rest it all depends from the person to person that he/she wanna discover a new culture or just beach culture.

the reason most people recommend goa to foreigners is because it is one city whose culture closely resembles that of the european having remained under foreign occupation for a long duration time.

not to mention the beaches where the rules are not as strict as they are down south(india).

moreover free availability of alcohol is another factor(less restrictions).

not to mention that they are a lot of good churches(basilica of bon jesus).

so it is basically a combination of the above factors which leads to most people recommending goa as a popular tourist spot in india.

vacations means having fun and relaxation and Europeans think that relaxation comes from the beach hence Goa is promoted another reason is even though there are many more beach destinations GOA tourism board advertises the most aggressively and therefore no other places are talked about

Personally, i would prefer to go to Runthumbore or the north east where there is much more greenery and a lot less tourist

I do not think so that this is always answer because India is so vast with so much diversity to offer. It depends on what you want to see/do. India offer all kind of culture, environment, geography etc.

I think ppl coming to india should experience something different from their own cultures as goa is being promoted coz of its beach culture, i dont understand this!! There's so much to see in india other than goa. If you want to see the real india, go to the villages, visit cities by train or road rather than by plane. Visit towns like Amritsar, Agra, central india, where india's true heritage lies.

yeah, that's unfortunate. there's so much more to see there. i ran into alot of college students backpacking during my trip. they all stopped by goa or mumbai because those were more traditional vacation destinations - better hotels, nightlife, beaches, etc. personally, i didn't leave the northern part of the country but still visited over fifteen cities and had a great time. india's a beautiful country.

One of the reasons why Goa is being promoted is because the Europeans have a 'Beach culture'. So they want to promote Goa, as a holiday destination where people can come regularly. The reason why art and architecture is not being promoted is because, you will see those places only once in your life time. But you come back to a holiday destination again and again!

People say Goa because they had fun there drinking, dancing, sun-bathing, to sum it up..."partying." Of course you can do this in other parts of India but since youngsters from India itself love to go to Goa, they recommend it to other people. Also, if you visit the historic/architectural wonders of India, you'll notice they're not maintained as well as they should be, and moreover they're not promoted as much either.

GOA is considered to be one of the best tourist places in India!

And the other reason might be that people have not heard about other tourist spots in India!

Goa has everthing to offer, adventure tourism, beach tourism, shopping, temples, churches, forts, river cruises, spice farms, etc....
The USP of Goa is probably the ambience, the easy going slow life and environment makes you are not in India.
