A Roadtrip Of Ireland? |
If you were to go on a week long winter road trip around Ireland -
Where would you go?
What would you visit?
Where would you stay?
Where would you eat?
Budget or Top Luxury, if you think it's good, we'd love to hear about it. Bare in mind that we're guys in our 20's and we also love pubs. |

Not very patriotically I'd recommend going North and start your tour at the Giant's causeway, then all around the North coast to Derry, take the road to Letterkenny until you find a right turn to Buncrana on the Inishowen peninsula. (On the opposite side of the road there is a narrow road up to the Griannan Aillel, from where you will have the most amazing view, if the weather is not too bad.)
Go to Port Salon, where 2 years ago there was still one of the last traditional Irish post offices +shop + pub, as you go along the counter, and one of the most spectacular beaches in Ireland.
Go to Letterkenny via Ramelton, stay in the Mount Erigal Hotel and drive out the coast road(N56), leave the N56 after Falcarragh and drive around Bloody Foreland all the way to Gweedore /Bunbeg, there is a lovely B&B at the harbour in Bunbeg with sea food that's usually today's catch, that route is beautiful at any time of the year, even more spectacular in wild weather (which you are likely to get) then you go back to Letterkenny via the mountain road and Dunlewy beside Mount Erigal. There is the Glenveigh National Park with an 18th century castle on the way, the gardens won't be at their best, but I think it's well worth a visit.
If you follow only a few of the brown roadsigns that point out the special sights, your week might be gone by then, if not drive up to Galway and Connemara before you return.
The reason I recommend the North is that it is as nice to look at in winter, whereas the South, although even nicer in summer, tends to be a bit bleak during the winter months.
Have a lovely time, whatever you do, and remember that in Ireland speed limits don't mean that it is save to drive at that speed. |

You must go to Kilkenny on a Saturday night. Stay in a B & B and go to Langtons. The pub/Night club is the best in the world. All the Dublin girls come down for weekends to get away from the tourists. They outnumber the guys by about 6 to 1. The locals are fantastic. Unlike in the UK where we take the piss out of tourists, they certainly spoil us.
There is a championship golf course there also if you like golf. |
