You've changed tune. Are you a Unionist now?
Its not just a Catholic thing, its a general thing. Like it or not, the concensus in Northern Ireland and in Britain are not the same.

Lots of laws are different in the North to what they are in Britain, even within Britain a lot of laws are different between Scotland and England.
Apology to Podge & Rodge, I meant to give you thumbs up but clicked the thumbs down by mistake. |

At the time that the Act was passed through Westminster, the NI Assembly was governing from Stormont. Under the workings of devolved government, it was decided to let NI work out this issue by themselves, but they never did. Direct rule then returned but the Act was never extended to cover NI. I don't know why this is, but it may have had something to do with pressure from the Republic or fear that the Catholic population would protest at a time when tensions were already rising. |

There were/are just as many Protestant Unionists as well as Catholics opposed to it.

PS Northern Ireland isn't part of Britain. It's part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Edit:
No problem Sarah! |

its the one issue that nationalists and unionist communities agree on.
Since the majority of northern ireland is unionist it was their choice not to have abortion, it had nothing to do with the Magdalene laundries or the influence of the catholic church or the republic. Unionist MP vetoed the act in 1967. |

Because the mysogynists in power in the Irish government at the time didn't want to make it any easier for the poor terrified girls who were pregnant out of wedlock, plus believe it or not, it saved many institutions on labour costs. Have you ever heard of the Magdalen laundries? Those were run by nuns and where those poor girls worked (as penance) until they had their babies, and often afterwards also. They only got bed and board, they weren't paid properly at all. So the crawthumpers in Irish society could get their laundry done cheaply and at the same time salve their consciences that they were helping those 'poor lost souls' get into heaven.
While I do sometimes miss the innocence of the past, there are some things I am very glad are confined to history, and a 20th century country in which contraceptives were prohibited is one of them. |
