Foreign potatoes are not welcome in Ireland. They must have forgotten that potatoes originated in South America not Ireland so they should import them out of respect.

Just buy spuds in the country, ain't that expensive

No, there was no potato importation scandal but whether or not you can bring fruit or veg into the country may depend on where you're bringing them from.
If you are coming from outside the EU then the potatoes have to stay where they are:

The cracks about potatoes are a reference to the famines of the 1840s. Irish people love their potatoes, worshippping the spud is practically part of the religion.
If you're thinking of bringing some from the UK, check out the big UK retailers like Tesco first they might have what you want.

well they might let ya bring in 5 lb sack of Idahos if ya promised to eat em all . they probably dont like them red ones so ya had better bring them lil white ones

Why can't you just buy them here?

I was just laughing at that and my mum says your not! DARD (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) Check for food substances on anyone coming into the country - probably to prevent someone bringing in blight and causing another potato famine!

Don't see why not - that's how they got there in the first place. Potatoes aren't Irish.

I think bringing spuds into Ireland could be a sensitive subject, if you know your Irish History.
