American moving to Ireland?

Hey.. im moving to limerick this fall to start a new career at a dental lab making prosthetic dentures. That's besides the point, do Irish people like US citizens? I ask this because i also was accepted to an advanced position in Birmingham, England in the winter. I respect a people's view on american's because of the wrongdoing we have participated in, however i would rather live in the country that respects me the most. Thanks a lot whoever answers this question.

I'm going the opposite route to yourself after 3 years in a long distance relationship with an American man. I love America and the majority of Americans I have met are really cool.

Irish people in general wouldn't dislike Americans. You will get the odd a r s e that listens to the stereotypes. I hope you enjoy your time here.

Respect is individual, friend. If you are an honest and unstanding person and work hard, you will be welcome in either country, and your nationality won't matter a jot.

Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥
Most folks here will treat people as they find them. If you are a genuine, friendly person thats all that matters, not what your country has done in the past. I'm from England, now living in Co. Cork and I have only ever met warm, friendly people, never had any problems with the fact I'm English.

i live in limerick and would suggest moving here of course. if you lived here a year, it would probabaly only happen twice that you'd get a hard time for being american. (probably some guy in a pub just crackin a joke your way) but it would never be in a bad way. sure we all have our opinions politically, but we all know that everyone is different. so the worst to expect is just that odd little joke.so as long as you realise the person will be laughing with you and not at you, and just have a laugh back you'll be grand.

we respect the person who comes up with a counterattack to our slags! if you shy away from comments the person wll feel bad, and thats no good for having fun! and dont believe any stories you read about limerick being dangerous. ask any limerick person and you'll hear the truth. ask anyone outside limerick and you will hear a load of over-exaggerated stories about violence that got hyped up in the papers to distract people from the violence in dublin!

I'm studying at UL right now, and most everyone I've met has been extremely good-natured and kind. Although it's not an extremely diverse area, there is a good number of foreign people here. When I first arrived, it was right around the time of inauguration, and rather than slagging me about the old government, I was just constantly asked about how I felt about our new president.

As for Limerick itself, I've never felt unsafe here. "Stab City" is a bit of an overstatement in my mind. As long as you stay out of the shadier areas like Moyross, you're fine. It's a wonderful city, with lots of places to see and lots of enjoyable pubs to visit. I highly recommend it.

Unfortunatley some Irish people stereotype others like they themselves are stereotyped but most Irish people are very welcoming

Honestly i would say if there is any group we are racist to it is Americans

it's only the fashionable left and student odd balls that think it's cool to spout crap off about America.

There are foreign policies of America that i don't agree with at all, but i take these on a case by case basis. Unfortunately, (in England at least) we are very politically correct BUT being racist to Americans is socially acceptable racism. I don't agree with it, but that's the way it is.

Little kids will talk crap about how you joined the WW2 late, but won't commend America on the fact that they joined it all and it was before they were even born to know most things about it!

As a fellow American I have to say that I didn't participate in any wrongdoing. I didn't vote that bunch in, far from it. Holding an entire nationality responsible for the actions of it's government is illogical, but some do it. Stereotyping is very easy and lazy. All nations have misdeeds in their past or present - even Ireland.

I think Ireland would be a better choice, as the people seem pretty accepting. You might get some grief from the misinformed, but I think the adjustment will be easier there than in the UK. In many parts of the UK it is very fashionable to bash Americans (which is odd given the bloody history of the British) and the bias would be higher there. There is some of that in Ireland, but not as much.

Not all of Limerick is rough. Hopefully some Limerick locals will answer this and give advice on where to settle. It isn't as if Birmingham is a haven of safety.

we dont hate americans! but if you want get on well here then please dont be ignorant about our country or culture!
an im not saying that just because your american, you wouldnt believe how many foreigners come over here believing stuff like were part of england, and we all live in thatched houses and grow potatoes in our back gardens!
one of my college lecturers told us he was in new york about 10, 15 years ago and some people actually believed ireland was still in a famine!
so please and i would say this to anybody, try not to be ignorant, and one more thing, and i say this in the nicest way possible you know those people who go to another country and make it there Business to let everybody know that there not from that country by talking load, wearing there national flag and basically telling everybody and anybody that there (these are just examples) american, or english, or Australian, or whatever!
please dont do that! because the fact is nobody cares! nobody here really gives a fiddlers about nationality, if your nice and respectful to us, youll get the same treatment in return! people here tend to give what they get, so just treat us how you would like to be treated :)

jolly Molly

Well my best friends family are from Reno Nevada and they love it here. Never had any problems. Just dont move to Limerick like that other answerer said, unless you want to be murdered by gangsters.
