I've managed to get back to the 1840s with my family tree using just one website. You have to pay to view records though, a fiver a go and no refund if you make a mistake:
http://www.irish-roots.ie/

I don't want to put you off but it can be difficult getting records in Ireland. A lot of them were destroyed (burned) during the rising and civil war. Try:

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

Also try

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

This is an American site, run by the Church of the Latter day Saints but it can be good. Also try

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

And if you are not in Dublin, most counties are on it and you can google Irish Census and you will get the correct site if you put the county in.

Records were poorly kept in Ireland and there are few online. I have ancestors I've been trying to trace for years without success, even though I know what county they lived in. What records are available are spotty. I suggest you google "Irish genealogy records online". Good luck.

What is your surname - many names are from particular areas which might help as starting point (eg if you are a 'Gallagher' - Donegal would be good place to start.

You don't say which part of Ireland your ancestors were from. My father was from Co. Mayo and I found quite a few records on the familysearch.org website also the North and South Mayo Family Heritage Centre have transcribe civil and church records up to 1900. Their website is called mayoancestors.com but you have to pay to view records. Also there is website called leitrim-roscommon.com which have the 1901 census records for that area of Ireland online.

probably best to keep the whole thing quiet
you don't want people making stereotypical conclusions about you
you probably do wash and are sober from time to time
after all
