Any parents here worried about college fees?

We've got 3 teenagers, 2 hoping to go to college next year and one just coming up behind them and going in 2011. I've a new baby on top on of that and I'm really starting to worry about them reintroducing the fees.

If fees do come back none of mine will be going. We're like so many other families who are just over the limit for any type of grants is as it is if there's not fees and they go we'll have to help keep them etc. If there are fees you can be full sure we will just over the level of those who wont have to pay them, but we still definitely wont be able to afford it. Its something like €6000 a year just for all the fees and then you have give them a hand with rent etc.

It worries me too because I remember the recession on the 80's, every out of work and no one had any qualifications. People would just leave school with nothing and go on the dole.

I had thought at least with this recession there no work but the young people are qualified so they can emigrate or there's hope for them when things start to pick up.

I think if the fees are brought back it'll be back like it was in the 80's with a generation leaving school to go and queue for a living. When the recession does end we''ll have nothing but unqualified people which wont encourage investment by outside companies, and that what Ireland depends on.

Bringing back the fess will save money in the short term but I think long term its bad.

What do ye think?

Is there anyone here who can honestly afford to put their kids through college?
Additional Details
Actually my husband and I both have good jobs (im on maternity leave at the moment). But we're a typical middle class family.

We get get hit by all the tax hikes and levies. We're always just above the cut off for any kind of financial help, but not nearly rich enough to take out big loans to put the kids through college, not if there fees.

Sometimes I feel like we'd be better off on the dole if they bring back fees, so that we'd be able to get grants or something.

Im in college and just about getting by, what with books, rent, etc...I thank God I get my degree this year as I definitely couldn't afford to continue when they bring back fees....

I agree the government can't see past their noses never mind watching out for the long term consequences...

All they do these days is piss people off with their excessive and unnecessary spending and then look to us for more money..

Q2- what you on about. Its just one vicious circle if you cant afford college than you end up with a crappy job you have children then they cant go so they end up with a crappy job. At least the teenagers want to try and have a decent life. Which is just like me really we don't have much money but i am going to try so damn well hard to get a good successful career.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
People who can afford to pay college fees for their kids should pay them. People who can't afford it will qualify for a grant.
That's the way it should be.

My parents are more worried about me getting into uni! No matter what though I am getting a degree. Going straight into work is not even an option.
Same story here though, we would be just over the limit for receiving grants, kinda makes you think getting a lesser paid job would be easier....

YES ! When you hear the amount of debt at 21 years of age not suprising they leave .

The mistake they made was to let too many people into college in the first place. Now your average homeless man on the straight has a degree. They need to make it harder to get into and keep it free. That way the they fish out the wasters not the unfortunate people that simply can't afford it.

I'm currently paying €5000 for my masters and I have to work 2 jobs to pay my living expenses. Then there are people in the same course who are just there because they didn't want to get a job yet and they have mummy and daddy paying for everything.

One of your main priorities in life is to Educate your children and do whatever is necessary to do so.

I'm assuming you are a single parent? if so i know it must be very hard and stressful beign unbale to support them financially through school.

I have 4 other siblings who went to University before me and my dad always told us that Educating your children is the most important part of bring up children and he would really try to encourage us to go to Uni. From the first year he started he save up money for our tuition fees.

Q2
You should have gotten a better job so you could support your kids. I am having no problem sending two kids to university.
