Dublin is great. Western Ireland is for beauty and Southern Ireland is for sights/scenery too. Northern Ireland also has Giants Causeway.

Try a couple days in three places maybe...Galway,Kerry,Waterford.Can't go wrong anywhere really. How's your Dad for travelling...like to move around a bit or stay put someplace? A couple of days in Dublin is enough for the finances...Money gone mad there, so if he likes staying put, don't stay in Dublin. Maybe a day there on the way out or back if your flying or sailing to Dublin. Won't see all of it,but still ok. Good train and bus service from Dublin,or a bus from Dublin airport over to the west coast for Galway, another decent bus route south from there to Kerry...beautiful there..lovely places to see...really cute little airport too....cosy..Killarney,and do the lakes...heaven on earth...lovely trip that..the town has seen better days, bit touristy now, still lovely, but the lakes and hills...Ooooohhh!...beautiful!!.. .or you could go south from Dublin to Waterford...see the Waterford Crystal factory..nice visiting tour... nice along the water too...lots of fine buildings, historical place......Kilkenny Castle while your down that way...so much around there to see, really doesn't matter where you go...you'll be in good stuff anywhere. Cliffs of Moher are very impressive as a day trip from Galway,it's a nice coach trip round Galway bay and past the Galway Bay Hotel...you can get a lovely supper there while you watch the sun go down over Galway Bay...you've really seen it then, not just heard the song...but they don't do T-shirts,not a touristy joint,.... and then the road climbs into the hills....lunar landscape...quite striking to see. Stunning,weird,mystical,....Visitor centre when you get there for snacks and souvenirs ...or see the cliffs from below on a short cruise from Galway if you don't mind boats....same company does trips out to the Aran Islands.... or you can go by plane...only a few minutes on the plane, but ages getting to it.... Ferry doesn't run in rough seas though...Great pubs in Galway for music...they keep the music and dance alive there. I've known a whole pub fall silent to let a guy sing...try that anywhere else..lovely Irish tenor....I held my phone up so my mother could hear it in the south of England, and the guy was delighted. Quite overcome actually. And the landlord bought me a pint!...What a place...lovely.....The Crane is the top spot for gigs, and there are others if it's too crowded there..it gets very popular..wonderful evenings there, head buzzing with music when you leave...glorious! Lovely little place,Galway...quite scenic too. Quay Street,Spanish Arch, very pretty ...Doolin's the same, further south ... small place..pretty..it's got the music...lovely country around too.... Right down south is the Dingle Peninsular...gorgeous,you'll never want to leave.... Stuck for choice really....could fly to Galway or Wexford or Kerry or somewhere with Aer Arann or Ryanair instead of going to Dublin...they do ten airports in Ireland, north and south and they both do cheap deals quite often....Ryanair and a few others fly to Kerry ...To find out if you can fly to a particular place from where you are,put that as the departing airport and you'll get a drop-down list of where they fly to from there when you click on the 'going to' box. See if there's a convenient airport for you, and then book it the other way round if it suits. Like starting the booking in reverse. Easy way to work out a plan of what's possible or convenient. You could book single flights...don't have to be returns....and then fly back from somewhere else. Ryanair to one place...Aer Arann from another,whatever....Often do that...can have a tour round then without having to get back to where you started. Dublin's nice, but very expensive...good nightlife in Temple Bar and some lovely architecture and gardens everywhere ..Stevens Green gardens are nice if you're up Trinity way..good place for a rest.....and some beautiful doors all over town,if you take the trouble to look...famous for them, is Dublin. Very nice too ....Trinity College is worth seeing,Phoenix Park, the zoo....loads up the north too...some very pretty places up there..beautiful glens ...the causeway,....Lough Neah,lovely..the biggest natural lake in Britain,20 miles long...or you could stay in Newcastle on the coast south of Belfast with the Mountains of Mourne rising up behind it...lovely little place...Belfast itself even,it's really nice, lots to see on the coast or inland..some lovely places to see around there....how many months did you say you were going for.....? You'll need them.

Id aviod Dublin as its really expensive almost £5 for a pint(yes thats five pound sterling).Other people have suggested galway and id have to agree its a lovely part of the world and almost every bar has irish music of some description.

Donegal is nice scenery but youd need a car prob to get around.

Belfast is also a great option. The people are friendly and its cheaper than the south at the minute. There is lots to see and there plenty of places offering irish music and good guiness. The tour of Belfast on the tourist bus is supposed to be very good plus there is daily trips to the Giants Causeway.also carrickfergus castle is one of the best castles in Ireland and only 30 mins away by train from Belfast.

There is a few new hotels that opened up recently so they are bound to have some introductory offers.I think one is fitzpatricks and maybe a ramada.I think Days might be relatively cheap too.

no matter where you go im sure youll enjoy it.

Dublins become very expensive, so avoid (shame really), Donnigal, Gallway and Kinsale are all worth a visit, he'll love it!

Dingle Peninsula and Doolin!

Dingle is beautiful and Doolin is a great Irish town with good pubs where you can hear traditional Irish music.

Just stay in one area. If you are coming to Shannon, try to stay in the west or the south-west. Try www.discoverireland.ie to see where you'd like, and perhaps if you told us what you and he are interested in besides new things - Beaches? Mountains? Rivers? Countryside? History? - we might be able to provide you with more information.

If you both like to go on the lash and live life, go to Dublin. Make sure your Hotel is within waking distance of the Temple Bar area.
Never to be forgotten.
