Get a Firearm Certificate Application form from your local garda station.
They will have a garda who will arrange a meeting with you and who will tell you what documentation you need to supply in order to have your application processed.
This can include receipts for your weapon and safe; proof of an alarm installation; proof that your gun will be stored securely is essential; details and proof of your club or association membership.
If you do not own land, you also need permission from a landowner to use their land - membership of a rural gun club means you don't need this permission as the club negotiates on its members behalf.
You also need to have a clean record and have a 'pillar of the community' type willing to give you a reference, unless the garda knows you and thinks you're 'sound'.
A firearm certificate costs €38. Iif you make any false claims on your application the fines are high, you will not be allowed a licence and in some cases you may face jail.
In terms of storing and transporting a gun, at home you have to have an alarmed gun safe which cannot be moved from its position. For transpoting the gun, you must use a lockable, portable gun carrier. It is an offence to carry a weapon in public outside of its carrier or to carry it in your car other than when you are travelling to and from the shooting range/gun club.
There are details of clubs and shooting ranges on the web. I've linked to a few below. |

Yes, here's a tip: Don't go carrying it down the street with you, people might get a bit frightened. And never bring it into the bank with you, people might get the wrong idea.... |

I'm sure SOMEONE in ireland owns one. in fact, my grandad owned one. he was big into hunting, might have been in the army as well, i think he was, not sure though.
To be honest, i haven't a bog how to go about getting one, no wal mart around here to go pick one up!haha! |

surprisinly it's very easy to get a license for a shotgun all you have to do is get a letter from a farmer, giving you permission to shoot on his/her land and give that to the gardai. My father is a land owner, he's written letters giving permission to hundreds of people (majority don't even shoot on our land). every year when you have to renew your license ask the same farmer for another letter. you can even type it up on the computer and just get the farmer to sign it. I always thought you couldn't get a license if you've a criminal record, but one guy had a record and he still got a license, which I think is wrong. |

Are you wanting to know about Firearm Laws in Ireland?
Or, are you curious as to what kind of shotgun to buy?
What is the purpose you need for buying one? Hunting? Protection? Sport? |

well, the firearms act in ireland is a bit silly, as most of the acts are.
as there is not proper 'look down on/look up to' authority in ireland, if you get what i mean.
it would be an idea to get a licence though.
if you own a farm, or land, your priviedged to get one.
my grandmother, lives in rural south tipperary, and she owns a farm, and used to have a shotgun, that was owned my my grandfather, also my uncle has a rifle, that he does shooting with, he obviously has a licence for it.
but aslong as you dont go buying one to use to shoot orangemen.
it may be fair sport, but is illegaL
also, the people of ireland are allowed to bear arms, for protection, the law reside's in the north aswell as the south.
a gun is always a good idea to have, especially if you got tress passers, live on the border (you can shoot proddys), shoot anoying neighbour, scare burgulars, etc. |
