Are "Culchies" just another Irish stereotype ? ?

Or are they a community ?

What's your opinion ?

Go raibh maith agat agus Nollaig Shona Duit. (:

I totally agree with Aileen. Although I spent many years in the city, college etc, and I work there, I very very happily live in the country, I would be considered a 'cultie' for my 'townie' counterparts, but like Aileen said, would rather be a cultie than a townie. I think depending on the way cultie is used, you can have a joke, but I would take the term as a bit of a backward person, wouldn't be up to score on the modern side of things. More like us culties, live in mud huts and wear wellies on the weekends. But hey, once again, Agree with Aileen.

A culchie is basically someone who lives in the country. Sayin that, I live in the country but I wouldn't consider myself a culchie cos I'm not that far in the country. I'm not a farmer, I don't live a secular country life, I don't have a piece of straw hangin out of my mouth and I don't say "aye baye".

I don't take it as an insult but still. My brother goes to school in Belfast and he considers me a culchie, so his perception's different. Wow, lotta fuss about nothin lol. It's a perception.

Being a culchie is noot an insult but i suppose its percieved differently everywhere. But im from the country and im a culchie and im proud of it! I'd rather be a culchie than a townie! We just joke about each other!

well culchie is an insult, it comes from some irish word that means someone who lives in a forest, so I am not too sure about it being a community.

:-P Agus Nollaig Shona Duit!

Culchie agus ta broduil orm mar seo!

Theyre not a communtiy. They would similarly call someone like me a "jackeen" and i certainly wouldnt consider myself part of a 'Jackeen community'.

We do have a stereotypical idea of what a culchie is but its not really an insult.
Im from Dublin but know a lot of people in college who are "culchies". They dont consider it an offensive term, at least not in my experience. One of my best friends is from the country and he doesnt care at all if i call him a culchie. If anything hes proud of it!
