Are the Irish Council for Civil Liberties just a bunch of cranks? |
It seems to us you only ever hear them giving out when something sensible is being introduced. At the moment they're getting their knickers in a twist about the Guards being issued with pepper spray.
A few years ago they were jumping up and down about CCTV cameras being put up.
Who even funds these crackpots?
Should they rename themselves the 'Irish Council for the Welfare of Criminals' instead?

It's not as simple as all that. The Irish Council for Civil Liberties are an organisation with a mission - to protect YOUR civil Liberties, which means, your personal freedom. What happens when that is taken away?, well, just look at the grand auld USA. One can be arrested(and frequently is) for looking like your were from Asia(which covers about half the world), you can be held without charge(if a neighbour happens to dislike you and he is white) and your phone and internet can be tapped in nearly all countries and you can do nothing about it. There is a whole host of other sly laws and rules that can take away your freedom. The most important aspects of civil liberites in Ireland is that my (and yours) forefathers in 1916 and long before DIED so we could have them. We went through 800 years of having no civil Liberties and now we are complaining because we have them. Before 1916 we couldn't speak Gaelic(a Civil Liberty), we couldn't own our own land, play our music, believe in many things which should have been our Civil Liberties. Thats is why it is important - FULL STOP. |
