Are there really 40 shades of green in Ireland or is that just meaningless words from a song? |

There are so many different shades of green that I am not even going to start counting them all. lol. New colours are being developed all the time. Yes Ireland is full of greenery which gives it the nick name the Emerald Isle but I would say there are a lot more then 40 shades of green here. |

There are many more than 40 shades of Green to be enjoyed by those people, lucky enough to be able to see Ireland through the seasons and in the hot and more normal rainy years. The actual climate and season has a big effect on colour density and range as does the differing parts of the Island.
It will never be freezing until the North Atlantic Drift (Warm Winter Current) moves. This is not to happen just yet but it can if the current climate changes continue.
The answerer that said it is just song words does not live here or counting colour differences is not their best talent, If in doubt come here and check it out |

What they mean is that Ireland is very green, because it's a temperate climate that gets a lot of rain, and the soil is very fertile.
You should travel through Ireland and you'll understand what is meant by the song. |

I never appreciated any of those kind of sentimental lyrics until I moved away from Ireland and only got to come back once or twice a year. After getting acclimatised to summer (scorched yellow grass) and winter (sodden yellow grass) abroad, it was always a kind of a shock to the system to look out of the airplane window and see the Irish countryside below, whether coming in to Dublin, Cork, Belfast or Shannon (although Shannon definitely has the best views). The vivid greens are not something you truly appreciate if you've lived here all your life, but you can nearly be blinded by them if you're accustomed to harsher climes. I don't think it's unique to Ireland, although we do have an abundance of it. Wales, parts of England, and the Scottish Borders share a similar climate and landscape. |

Do not worry your self about Ireland ! Think more about Scotland as the people in Ireland were Scots that could swim but not well enough to get back home & as their brain became waterloged during the swim they could not think of a way to build a raft or boat but to be fair they did grow good potatoes but their whisky is bloody terible. To be honest Scotland & Ireland share the same god made beauty/play each others music & we are both good people give or take a good Sat night on the bottle . Forget the song just go spend your cash & visit both countrys. |

Does Ireland really have forty shades of green? Though nobody has actually counted them, this would be a good guess - green is the dominant colour in Ireland's landscape. The simple reason for this is the Irish weather. While generally described as eternally changing, it is only changing within certain parameters. The influence of the gulf stream and the general climate combine to make Ireland well-balanced.
Seasons are not very pronounced - one usually enjoys "spells of" summer or winter, not the season as such. And even when Jack Frost nips and snow falls it will be on lush green fields. The green may fade a bit, but it never goes away.
And as folk will see when visiting Ireland: Johnny Cash was right - Ireland really has forty shades of green.

It is True we have the Forty Shades of Green, and the Original Flag of the Country was a Harp on a Bottle Green Background with the Words Eireann Go Brach, Ireland Forever. But Riddle me this Please and Tell me because I dont Know what do the Words mean in Johnny Cash's Song ,The Breeze was Sweet with Shalimar , and there's forty Shades of Green. |

Well there aren't literally 40 shades of green, no more, no less. But yes, the country is very green because of the climate. |

It's just descriptive language - sentimental marketing. Any place that has rolling hills and gets a lot of rain is just as green. Wales, England and other places etc...just as green. I know someone who moved to the American South because the scenery reminded him of home/Ireland.
Keep in mind that a lot of the "Irish" ballads in America were written by songwriters in NY's famous tin pan alley, to make some money off of sentimental and homesick immigrants.
That said - it is very beautiful - a nice payoff for the rain, no? |
