My father was an Ulster man, proud Protestant was he.
My mother was a Catholic girl, from county Cork was she.
They were married in two churches, lived happily enough,
Until the day that I was born and things got rather tough.

from the Irish Rovers--but does describe my family. My paternal Grandmother would not attend the wedding. She taught me to read the Bible and the priest was horrified when he found me reading a Protestant Bible (I didn't know then there were two kinds)

Some how I agree with pusscat. I'm Irish, but I don't like how we are taking sides. She's right, our flag is green and orange. We live in the same ******* country so why cant we just ******* get along??????? we both hate the bastard Brits so theirs something we have in common. I'm orange. I was born a green but my mum moved after the divorce and met my stepdad whose Scotish. Sweet Jesus you guys, were all Irish! But I do think pusscat could lighten up a little bit. we do love a good laugh.

Perhaps this forcing people to take sides is the reason that Ireland's Troubles still exist. Yes, I know the history is deep and complex. I know there have been atrocities committed on both sides of the fence. I know there are feelings of anger, disappointment, rage, helplessness and more going back generations.

But ultimately, asking people to choose sides is reductive. It's adolescent. Your flag is green AND orange. The best solutions are both/and, never either/or.

Yes, I'm an American, but I have Irish ancestors. I'm an English teacher, so I love the history, the literature, the architecture, the romance of old stones. (I'll be going to the Aran Islands this summer.) I hope that my commenting here isn't presumptuous, but I comment for the cause of peace, with a firm belief that the Irish must work things out for themselves... and that American "Big Brother" policies are arrogant and uncalled for often. We should not be in the Middle East right now.

That said, somehow, you have to resolve this issue of choosing sides, judging others, condemning others, making people "other". England and Scotland are united, yet each have their individual characteristics still very much intact. Why not for all of Ireland?

Ultimately -- at the risk of being flamed -- religion is the cause of this all. Religion that does not unite, that does nothing but cause friction, is toxic. Dwelling on the parts of history that alienate and separate people is a toxic thought process. This kind of religio-historical thinking and reasoning is an insane meme that you very well might be better off without. However, I also know that religion is as much a part of Ireland as are the green and rolling hills.

There are no easy answers for this; there are many facets, many points to consider. But look at your flag, which is both green and orange. Remember peace is every step. Peace is not just some amorphous "good idea" that's floating around out there. Peace begins in every one of us.

Everytime you interact with someone, talk to someone, or make a decision, you have an opportunity to work for peace -- right here, right now, every instance. You make peace. Peace begins every instance in every person. Peace is how we live and the decisions we make moment to moment. It's as easy and as difficult as that.

Remember your flag. Cheers, Kate (teacher, traveler, amateur historian, peacemaker)
