As an American with a grandparent from Ireland, can I get an Ancestry Visa, etc?

I've recently read that citizens anywhere in the UK with a grandparent from Ireland can obtain an Ancestry Visa for up to 4 yrs in Ireland. I do have an Irish grandfather, but I'm an American. I can't seem to find information on whether or not there is a way for me to still obtain this visa, or something similar. I'd really love to live in Ireland for several months to a year, so I'm hoping to find a way! If anyone has any information, it would be greatly appreciated!

British and other EU citizens do not need a visa for Ireland.

As a US Citizen you do not need a Visa to visit Ireland.

If you plan to work in Ireland you will need a Visa if you are not a citizen of the EU or Switzerland, for more details see the following link http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=8778.

You have to be able to prove they were born in Ireland, for a start. Did you not phone the Irish Embassy and ask them?

Yep, you can! If you have documentation that says they were born in Ireland, a birth certificate or a marraige certificate, you can apply through the Irish embassy. You can also get citizenship through the same scheme.

you would be able to obtain an irish passport and so would not need visas to come or work here.

Ring the Irish Embassy to find out but if you have the correct paperwork & your grandparent was born in Ireland you may be able to apply for an Irish passport which would cover to live and work in the UK & Ireland:
