Best Places to visit in Ireland? |
My boyfriend and I would like to travel to Ireland one day. We want to kinda go on our own and see the places that most tourists don't. He is interested in his heritage and we are both interested in history. Any suggestions? |

Go and look for the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow! Just remember, though...Leprechaun gold vanishes after just a few hours, so make sure you spend it quick after you find it! :-) |

You should read 'Around Ireland with a Fridge' by Tony Hawks it will give you loads of ideas and make you laugh out loud. |

Hire a car and drive around Ireland. You can drive to nearly any point in Ireland in 4-5 hours and you will discover more places that aren't tourist traps this way. There are hundred's of sites about tourism in Ireland. Just google it and plan out a route that you are going to take, as you are driving between places you will discover little villages.Every county in Ireland has different scenery and things to do, and it is hard to avoid tourists because the island is so small. |

Go to county Donegal. Every bit as gorges as the rest of Ireland but away from the real tourist business. Enjoy |

galway - connemara's good - rugged beaches, horseriding and all, corks a fine city if you want 'real' Ireland - but try smaller towns there like Douglas if you want less touristy areas. Dun Laoghaire outside Dublin's a much prettier alternative to the capital- try Northern Ireland too - Antrim, Portrush, Belfast are all great |

West Cork is a beautiful part of Ireland in the summer, and so is most of the west coast - Clare, Galway, Mayo. Not much to see in the midlands, and if you fly into Dublin do stay a few days but definitely make sure to get out of Dublin and see the rest of the country as well. |

Dublin is a bid expensive city and difficult to get around. It's good but don't stay there. Go to the west, the cliffs of mohar and the burren in county clare. Try the Blarney stone in county cork and when you're there go westwads to the ring of kerry and killarney national park.
There are a whole load of castles dotted across the countryside, try cashel in county tipperary for the splendour of old irish architecture. Newgrange in county meath (just outside dublin) is a pre historic development in pristine condition and it's older than the pyramids!
In Dublin there are lots of museums and things to do, the tourist office is in a grand refurbished church on South Anne's street on the southside of the city centre - they will give you lots of stuff to do.
Try belfast in northern Ireland, it's a super city and you can do tours to the giants causeway and the countryside, this is really worth doing. Also your accommodation will be able to sort you out with a 'black cab tour'. You have two choices, to go to the mueums and churches or to do the 'troubles' tour. I recommend the troubles tour, they show you the two main parimilitary areas, it's safe now, and they will give you a history of the 'war' in the north. This tour is excellent.
hope this helps |

Visit Co Fermanagh in Northern Ireland.
In particular I would recommend a place called Knockninny.
Knockninny Marina is located on the banks of Upper Lough.
Contact: Knockninny Marina, Knockninny Quay, Derrylin, Co Fermanagh, County: Fermanagh, tel: +44 (0) 28 6774 8590, fax: + 44(0) 28 6774 8590
It is very small and has a little marina (only a handful of boats). In front of the marina is a little cafe in a period house, which sells coffees and cakes. Accomodation is also available there. In the summer a number of events are being held there, including a jazz evening, a barbecue, etc.
For example, 28th May - Fete Champetre dans l'Apres Midi might be worth checking out.
Another place worth visiting in Fermanagh is Florence Court.
8 miles south west of Enniskillen, via A4 Sligo Road and A32 Swanlinbar Road, 4 miles from Marble Arch Caves.
Florence Court
County Fermanagh BT74 6JY
Tel: (+44) 01365 348249
It is a mid-18th Century house with garden (romantically named The Pleasure Grounds) and various buildings including stables, a recently restored water-powered sawmill, etc. It is managed by the National Trust, which aims to restore to its past glory.
The present house, the former home of the Earls of Enniskillen, was started by John Cole and completed around 1775. It was named after Florence, his wife.
If you enjoy beautiful houses, do go in and check out the rococo plasterwork, seen at its best at the top of the stairs and in the dining room.
The house also contains fine Irish furniture including an 18th century rococo armchair in the library, an Irish writing cabinet which dates from 1730 and an unusual 18th century bed.
When taking a stroll through the Pleasure Grounds, make sure you stop at what must have been built for lovers to admire the view. Turn right at the house, follow the path and go up when you see a little cabin. Its elevated position means you catch a fabulous view.
Enjoy! |
