Anywhere rural is less expensive than Dublin, and people are nice and welcoming everywhere. West coast (Mayo and Galway) are particularly nice. A lot will be determined by your own job - you need to live fairly close to your work to avoid being stuck in a traffic grid morning and night. However, unless you live in a town, a car is a necessity.

The Irish education system is second to none, and smaller schools in rural places give virtually individual attention. If there is a local secondary school, all the better. Louisburgh Co. Mayo matches up there. However, if you live near a town with third level education, you could save yourself a fortune in accommodation fees in the years to come. Think Carlow, Waterford, Sligo or any town with an IT college, or anywhere within easy reach of a university town.

I'd recommend Mallow or a village near one of the other satellite towns of Cork. The areas around Ennis in Co. Clare are also really nice. And anywhere near Galway is good. Try Google Maps and http://www.daft.ie to explore some areas and see what housing is like. Irish schools are pretty good in all the more rural towns - I'm not saying all are fantastic but you do have a good chance of randomly selecting a decent one.

Donegal.

when the sun goes down
maybe live in one of the satellite towns around the county or in Co.Dublin as it's kind of rural but you'll be near everything.

Waterford.

any where west of the shannon, life is slower and relatively problem free, avoid towns with a large knacker population

Anywhere within a 30 mile radius of Dublin is commuterville, it is not rural or even semi-rural.
I'm from Kilkenny and it's a great spot, plenty to do, good transport links and schools. Jobwise it depends on what you can do. It's a small town, about 9,000 people, but it has a hospital, schools, good shopping etc.

Any of the smaller towns around Cork, Waterford Limerick or Galway are good too.

Dundalk in co. Louth. Its near both Dublin and Belfast. Its less than 2 hours away from both and getting to those places is easy if you don't have a car. Take the bus or train, there's plenty. Plus Dundalk is not too over crowded.

im 29 and was born and i live in Dublin. Its a great city for going out, pubs etc. Could be hard to get to know people though, like any city i suppose. It is expensive and it the winter is a bit miserable but we have a great sense of humour and you can drive to any part of the country from Dublin in under 5 hours
