Go the main road route suggested if you must. But you asked for the best route! Go out of Dublin via Tallagh to Rathcoole. Take the Cork Road to Monastrevin. Cut across to Tullamore. Cross the Shannon at Shannonbridge. Go to Ballinasloe. Pick up the N6 via Loughrea tom Oranmore and then into Galway. It could be done in about four hours without rushing but you got to stop in every town I've mentioned. Tallagh for The Square shopping centre. Rathcoole for The Poitín Still, best road restaurant in Ireland. Monastrevin for the BRIDGES, yes trust me on this one. Edenderry for the canal basin. Tullamore speaks for itself. Shannonbridge for the pubs and the music. Ballinasloe for the horses and tinkers. Loughrea? Jases I'm stuck here Help me out someone. Oranmore for the first view of Galway Bay and shopping in Main Street. Will that be all then?

From Dublin get onto the M50 then M4/N4 to Kinnegad. In Kinnegad get onto the N6 to Galway

The N6 will take you through Athlone.

There is a new motorway from Dublin - Galway but I don't know what it is called - It has been open for about 8 months maybe a year.

The journey will take you more than 3 hours.

Enjoy your trip. Hope this is of help to you - I took the route from my 'complete road atlas of Ireland'.

You can get an aa route if you go onto an Irish site.

www.eircom.net or it might be www.eircom.ie then just type in the AA route planner words (just as you would in England).

It's the best route I can see, and more straight forward.

Alternate Route - Especially when the traffic is bad. Take the N7/M7 out by Rathcoole, and on to the M7 by Naas. Bypass Newbridge, Kildare, Portlaoise, through Mountrath, Borris in Ossory and onto Roscrea. Take a right before you get into Roscrea on the N62 towards Birr (about 18 miles). Just before you get into Birr take a left (N52) and then a right in Riverstown on the R489 (about 24 miles) to Portnumna. Cross over the Shannon and follow the N65 till you reach the main Galway Dublin Rd (N6) a few miles before Loughrea.
It takes about 2:45 minutes from Rathcoole
