Pumpkin. It's faaar easier!
We didn't buy a pumpkin last year, and we did have a turnip so I went and carved it.
It took me bloody hours. Never Again. Never ever again. It takes a lot of effort. Mine turned out like he had some sort of deformity. Well it scared people under 4 that's for sure. The 'cool' 9 year olds said it looked stupid. I nearly killed them, slag off my hard Halloweens work why don't you!lol! |

Traditionally turnips were used in Ireland for years, its only when our traditions crossed over to the US the Americans found pumpkins were easier manipulate, and from there pumpkin lanterns were born. So maybe I should stick to the traditional turnip but since I've already bought a little pumpkin...... maybe next year.
I haven't gone all out with the decorations, unlike some of my neighbours. I also bought loads of sweets but my nephews and nieces were over for the bank holiday weekend, so I'll have to stock up again. grrr damn kids, LOL |

Here in the US it's typically pumpkins. The turnips I've seen at the supermarket aren't very big anyway, but you can make some big ol' jack-o-lanterns with pumpkins! |

All the Irish supermarkets I visit have plenty of big pumpkins on sale. My lantern will be from a pumpkin, and I will use the carved-out bits for soup or roasted veg or maybe even pumpkin pie. It's going to be a great Halloween
Madeleine, potatoes wouldn't be nearly big enough. Silly idea. But we might have some as a side dish with the roasted pumpkin. |

Pumpkins, definitely. |

A pumpkin, although the smell of turnip brings me back to when I was wee, so I'll probably have one of them too. We have turnips growing in our back garden, so they're free. |

Pumpkin. Hard to make a turnip scary...unless you have to eat it. (I hated them as a child)
Not a lot of turnip carving going on in the US. Pumpkins are much tastier.... and easier to carve. |
