Boarding school in Ireland?

I have met a few people from Ireland recently and they all went to boarding school, is it common for people to go to boarding school in Ireland, or, like in the States, if you are loaded with money you send your kids to boarding school?

Yeah, its just for pretentious parents who would be absolutely horrified if they knew about the drinking, competitive dieting and shagfests that go on in most boarding schools, especially the convent ones.

More the loaded with money variety. Education is basically free in Ireland, so it is mainly the wealthy who want their children to make friends with like-minded others, and to learn to network among the equally privileged elite, who choose boarding school over the local one that just anyone can go to. There are also quite a few foreign boarders, but guess what, their parents aren't short of a few bob either.

in ireland you only go to private/boarding school if your parents have lots of money
one of my friends went to one of the most popular private schools here and she has told me many times that it was WAY worse than any public school (she had easy access to drugs and alcohol and they had a lot of sex)
most people i know with good jobs attended public schools

Usually if your People has plenty of Money they send you to Boarding School. Though there are plenty of very good Schools nearby in many Districts. A lot of these Schools have Half and Half, Half of them are not Boarders and the other Half are. A lot of these Schools now are finding it hard to keep Going and are closing down. Some examples of Boarding Schools St Joseph of Cluny Girls, Dominican Convent Muckross Park Marlborough Rd Donnybrook Girls. Blackrock College Rock Road Williamstown Blackrock Boys and I think Girls go there now as well. Clongowes Wood College in Ballymore Eustace Boys. Saint Michaels in Ailsbury Road Dublin. Stratford College in Orwell Road, It was a Jewish School but now it takes in everybody. A lot of People who are away from Home for various reasons Related to there Employment and cant be in a position to mind there Children and are reasonably well off have to send their Children to Boarding School.

Sher didn't Jimmy Joyce go to Clongowes Wood, and sher didn't the literary and cultural world get the magnificent 'Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man' out of it?

There is even a mixed boarding school in Dublin.

Only very wealthy people send there kids to boarding school and they usually are too busy to look after their off spring. But less wealthy people can send there children to day school in the boarding schools.

Here is a list of boarding schools in Ireland.
