Can Ireland seriously survive a recession.?

Most people remember that there was NO prosperity in Ireland save for a few corupt people prior to the 90s.

With the Celtic Tiger many people were trained and got jobs because companies had to do that to get staff. It was boom boom boom, lots of jobs, houses went up, prices rocketed. People bought holiday homes abroad etc etc.

No prior to this Ireland was a third world country with massive unemployment, for example in 1988 you could get a 4 bed house in dundrum on dublins south side for around 50k, 20 year later they are close to 800k.

So with American companies cutting back and looking for what ireland once was (a cheap, english speaking workforce with good subsidies) in other locations what will happen to Ireland.

You can not say that we survived this before because we didnt, Ireland would never have had the celtic tiger without Europe (who are pissed at the Irish over the lisbon treaty) and America (who are in their own mess) so its unlikely that there will be another celtic tiger.

What do you seriously think, I dont think it will be 2010, I think it could not come back, if other American companies like Intel, Ebay and the biopharmas move that will be it.

Thats the thing, the only reason that people bought houses and the only reason that people had new cars was the abundance of US jobs and the ancillary industries to support them.

Unlike the UK, Ireland doesnt have any industries. Its a terrible situation.

Sshhhh! It's Podge and Rodge
What's the alternative?
We remember the 80s and nobody had anything at all. Most people are still much better off now than they were back then. And the music was fairly shyte as well with the likes of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet knocking around the place.
The problem with the youngsters (anybody under 30) is that they've only known the good times so far and they've taken it completely for granted. It might soften their cough a little bit now that the good times are over. At least we won't be listening to any more of this rubbish about holiday homes in Bulgaria, mocha choca skinny latés, paninis and the like. They'll have a cup of tea and a ham sangwich like the rest of us from now on!
IT'S FAR FROM PANINIS THEY WERE REARED!

Podge and Rog have the only answer you need!!

i read an article by some leading US economist (if i find it ill post the link) and he said that Ireland would bounce back within 10 years and would be one of the leading countries economically in the EU. He said this is due to a highly skilled workforce, which makes sense as so many people go onto third level education here.
He said that countries that have cheaper labour costs would get companies that need low skilled work, such as packaging etc...but the more high tech stuff would be in ireland. The article said that Dells main ops are still here...they moved the lower skills depts to poland.

Lets hope he is right.

Edit: ok i found it - http://www.independent.ie/business/ireland-will-bounce-back-within-a-decade-1598790.html

Don't tell my boss I'm on here
Aye, I was going to answer myself but Podge and Rodge got it right enough even down to the Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet.

Tea and Ham Sandwiches here we come for the time being.

Course we can! Everything is possible! As Bob the mighty builder said, 'Can we do it? YES we can!' :-D

YES WE CAN!!!

Yea it's a big concern and you summed up exactly what i was thinking. What exactly do we make in this country. We have no industries! Everything we do we rely on foreign companies. We are screwed! Time will tell but i totally get your point.
