i think so , we would send one's from belfast down

Banks in the Republic of Ireland (I am assuming that you do mean the Republic of Ireland and not just the southern part of the island) will allow customers to lodge foreign currency cheques and P.O.s to their accounts. They do, however, charge handsomely for the privilige.

Why not buy a eurocheque from your own bank and send that?

post offices cannot take them, but some banks might allow customers to deposit them to accounts. Southern Irish POs are definitely not cashable outside the republic

you can put it into a bank account

Assuming you have a bank account, yes. Post offices wont cash them. You will be charged 1euro99cents by the bank, who will convert your sterling into euro. The rate at the moment is .68 so £100 would equal 147 euro. Spend it well. Merry Christmas.
