Unless you're deep south of Dublin, you're always pretty close to the airport. The 746, 747, 748, 16A and Airlink (The green buses) all go to the airport (Airlink being the fastest but most expensive). There is a very good hotel called The Gresham Hotel on O' Connell Street which is the very heart of Dublin. Although I'm sure it's very expensive considering where it is positioned!

Some more near-airport hotels would be:
The Skylon Hotel
The Great Southern Hotel
Clarion Hotel Dublin Airport
Carlton Dublin Airport Hotel
Ballymun Plaza Hotel (although be careful wandering around Ballymun, it is quite a rough area)

Hope this helps!

there are buses directly from the airport everey 15 minutes.

the coach is called "aircoach", it will bring you to the centre of dublin, without any walking. get off at the stop for "o connell street" i think its the 3rd stop.

o connell street is covered in really good hotels at affordable prices. to decide on a hotel now is silly, i think you should ask for the prices of a few of them!, then compare prices or quality, they are all within about 5 mins walking distance of one and other

the aircoach also goes back to the airport every 15-30 minutes

its the most accessible, reliable and handy way!, i use it myself.

The Hilton has some good offers, if you just want somewhere closeby for an early morning flight.

Otherwise, as others have said, the airport isn't that far out of the city, though avoid rush hour travel as everything gets delayed inclusing Aircoach and Airlink.
