Only our capital city has post codes. Outside of Dublin the rest of the republic of Ireland doesn't have any.

No postcodes outside of Dublin city, and not always house numbers either.
If you say so...
Yep, there are several.
Like take the capital Dublin.
It is divided by code, from D1 right tru to D24.
But having said that if you know street, town and county it will more than likely get there.

Dublin has postal zones, and N.Ireland has post codes just like the rest of UK. In the rest of the country we manage fine without them. Mail reaches me with just my name, town and county. It's a small town, don't really need street, townland or house number. (No, I'm not world famous) Bigger places might need the extra info, especially where there may be more than one family with the same Christian names, in the area.

Not yet, but there is one promised. see Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_postal_districts
The current exceptions being Dublin (1 or 2 numbers or a number and a letter, eg Dublin 1, Dublin 26 and Dublin 6W) or cork (single digit number) - and Northern Ireland where it is BT [1 or 2 numbers] [space] [number] [letter] [letter].
The system they reckon will be introduced into Ireland is based on the code for the county (the same as the one on number plates - eg G for Galway or DL for Donegal) followed by a number based on GPS co-ordinates so you'll be able to look it up on a map.
Whether "Postcode" is the correct word is debatable though, since even though the Government want to implement (presumably out of our taxes) An Post say they are not interested in using it.

Postcodes/Zip codes
In general, Postcodes are not required. The exception is Dublin and Cork city where a 1 or 2 digit zone number appears after the name of the city (eg Dublin 2). This number is shown after the street name (eg 25 Clare Street 2 = 25 Clare Street, Dublin 2).
Sal*UK
Not required - only for Dublin and Cork.

There are different postcodes in each area of Ireland
