hi you
yes you can but only if your a UK citizen

rainy-h
Yes, you can. I went last year and on the road we drove down we literally crossed over the border and back about 4 times and barely noticed (except the NI speed limits are in mph and the Eire ones are in kmph - be careful of that ha ha!!). There is no border, control or checkpoint whatsoever anymore. Hx

If you're just going by road or train then yeah of course. You don't need any sort of ID, you just drive over the border. I live pretty close to the border ... a lot of people on the north side would cross over to buy petrol as it's cheaper, and a lot of people on the south side would cross over to do their shopping. (I'm not sure why, maybe it's because the north still has plastic bags??) They wouldn't bother doing this if it was going to be a big hassle. In fact, very often you don't know you've crossed the border until your phone loses its network and the street signs change from miles to kilometres or the other way around!

Misty Blue
There's no such thing as border checks between the north and south anymore.I live near the border and cross it frequently.

Having said that I'm pretty sure there's roving customs officers keeping a check on possible non-nationals entering the country who would need to present a passport if stopped.

Pyro
Yeh?! I've gotten the train loads of times without a passport no problem, and driving up through Newry isnt a problem either.

Lilly
The best idea is to carry a picture i.d. We traveled up to belfast and back. on the way up there was no problem. On the way back we were stopped and asked for photo i.d. It was just a random check point.

Viva La Eire!
if by road then yeh, no problem!

florentina272
Yes of course no problem

slipstreamer
Yes you can by car or train. There is no border really in the sense you are thinking.

if u go by bus you will need it if you go by car you will get in if you bribe the guards with 50euros but if you walk you can climb the fench at the checkpoint.
