A N Mouse
You don't need a passport to cross between the UK and Eire. might be handy to have ID with you but not compulsory

greenst64
picture id is fine. You probably wont even have to show that.

jackie m
my aunt lives over the border and goes shopping to the north and doesn't need a passport.

blue_metwo

if your travelling by road you'll be fine, they don't check, they dot have to!

Although if your not an Irish citizen then you'll get a swift booting outa here if they find out your planning on working!

They sometimes will accept another form of ID but more likely a drivers licence than a rail card ID. The official advice is that you should check if the ID you want to use is valid with the specific airline/carrier you want to use.

Yeah u dont even need a passport.I live in the south and thanks to peace and prosperity there is virtually no border or divisions between north and south

ALAN B
Don't think I've ever been asked for ID crossing the border by road and I do it every few months, you'd certainly struggle to find anyone to show a passport to. The only indication is the signs changing from miles -> km.
By train I'm sure I've never been asked either.
By plane you will be asked for ID and a rail card will probably not be an acceptable ID, they usually want an driving license or passport.
