Can you help me plan a trip to Ireland and Scotland?

I have to get away, I have never been off the North American content. I am poor, but have saved up some money to go on a trip for 2 weeks. I have narrowed down my destination to Ireland and Scotland. I am researching them on the web, but have no sense of either place, and wouldn't know where to start. I would like to start in Ireland, make my way to Scotland and then home. I don't want to go on any organized tours, just to travel independantly. Any recomendations?? Stories?? Suggestions of links to transportation sites in either places. Thanks in advance!

if you don't have a lot of money - try the hostels in ireland some are really upscale and are usually close to the best attractions so you will save on transport as well as accommodation http://www.hostels-ireland.com/ this site is also cool to plan what you would like to see.
The bus is cheaper to get around in Ireland than the train http://www.buseireann.ie/site/home/

I think Edinburgh is the best place to stay in Scotland (just my opinion) but it can be expensive try the hostels there as well - this is a good one but depends when you are going (http://www.edinburghguide.com/accommodation/show_detail.php?pid=78)
http://www.edinburgh.org/
Again cheaper to bus than to take the train - website for bus service in scotland http://www.citylink.co.uk/

Best way to get from Ireland to Scotland or Scotland to Ireland is by air - Ryan air is a no frills airline which does the Dublin - Edinburgh route http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/
Most expensive time to go to is July and August
Best time to go to either is September or May/early June

Easiest and not expensive way to get between Ireland and Scotland is by air BUT if you wish to go to Northern Ireland (UK) then yes you can catch a ferry

Last answers were pretty good. Hostels is definitely the way to go if you are on a budget.

But I think going from Ireland to Scotland by air is a waste. You can go much cheaper by ferry, especially from Northern Ireland - which is a beautiful place to visit too.

I am sure from the ferry habors you can take a bus pretty cheaply to all large cities in scotland.

All I can say is don't research into it online too deeply or else you'll ruin the personal experience of actually being there. Just look up some hot spots online (like just the location+overview) and just do it! have fun!

If you end up in the northern half of Ireland and want to get to Scotland cheaply, I reccommend using one of the coach companies. They are very cheap and take the coastal route from Stranraer/Cairnryan in Scotland up to Glasgow so youd get to see the south-west coast en route which is a pain if you're in a hurry but beautiful if you're just out to fill your eyes. They operate various routes from Donegal through county Derry and County Antrim to Belfast or Larne depending on which you choose. If you're interested contact me and I'll do some asking around for 'phone numbers.

Make sure to check into aer lingus they seem to be the cheapest to fly. You can get vouchers for bed and breakfast. they are really great. you by a few voucher and any bed and breakfast will honor them if you want to save money and a headache do not get a rental car. I really enjoy meeting people so next time I will get a weekly pass which is around 50 euros and you can go all over Ireland

If you decide to go to N Ireland on your trip I would suggest you use the Belfast to scotland ferry it is cheap and it only takes about an hour and a half. You can book it using this link.
