We,ve had 2 female presidents.

We spent €4.8 million on an ugly looking statue in Dublin City that believe it or not is just a silver spike sticking out of the ground, we have knicked named it the stiffy by the liffey.
We still have bullet holes in the GPO from the 1916 rising.
Also look up a woman called Dr Kathleen Lynn (1874-1955) she has a really interesting life. |

Billie M: There are plenty of names used other than Paddy, and no self-respecting Irish person born and reared in Ireland would ever saddle their child with a name as naff as Colleen. Or Erin. Please.
Grace O'Malley, aka Granuaile, pissed off the English navy for quite some time before being invited to visit Queen Elizabeth I. Grace did not curtsy to Elizabeth, and when Elizabeth asked her why she didn't, Grace said 'I am a Queen in my own country, so we are equal'. Elizabeth might not have liked her, but she respected Grace's neck.
James Joyce, who greatly influenced modern literature, was from Dublin. So was Oscar Wilde, although he was Anglo-Irish. He was also gay.
Many early Nationalists were Protestant, a little fact conveniently ignored by the fire and brimstone crowd on both sides.
There are dozens of castles in Ireland still standing, but ruins of thousands exist. There are two within 2 miles of my house in County LimerickAbout 8 miles away is the ruin of a fairly large fortress which unfortunately is on private property, and has signs warning people away all around it.
The sport of steeplechasing came from Ireland, from County Cork to be exact, between the villages of Buttevant and Doneraile.
Mallow Castle is said to be haunted by a white rat, and many of the great houses have 'white ladies' - ghosts of young women of Anglo-Irish extraction whose English beaux decided to marry elsewhere, or who went to war and never came back.
Irish traditional music and dance is very eclectic - the music is greatly influenced by Northern African, Arabic and Mediterranean music genres, while the dance is very close to both Spanish flamenco dancing and English country dances.
Google 'bodhran' and see what you find. And look on YouTube as well, come to think of it ....
Visual arts are back with a vengeance ..... |

Although Ireland doesn't necessarily spring to mind when one is asked to name countries at the forefront of gender equality, it certainly holds one record. Mary Robinson was the first female President of Ireland. She was followed, with little fuss, by Mary McAleese. This is the only instance in the world where one female President was replaced by another.
Chocco B - some interesting information, but could be more than 10 years out of date. Ireland's currency changed from the Irish Pound to the euro on 1st January 1999. This is March 2009. |

They do the most magnificent breakfasts. In Donegal city I once ate the breakfast of a lifetime. All sorts of cereals, porridge, mixed grill, kippers, kedgeree, toast, superb marmalade, lots of orange juice and fine coffee - and that was only in a bed-and-breakfast place ! Not even a two-star hotel !! |

J.R.R Tolkien spent some of his time in "Connemara", Galway while writing the Lord of the Rings. the terrain there is believed to influence how the author developed ideas for Rohan and Mordor. the landscape is phenominal. Desolate, greatly un-touched by man, windswept and scenic...
The west coast of Ireland exhibits some of the most beautiful landscape i've ever seen...
Now, bet you did'nt know that ! |

The Euro came into existance in 1999 but it wasn't till 2002 that the punt was actually replaced by the Euro
As for interesting facts about Ireland
Halloween is an ancient Celtic irish festival when the Celts believed it was the boundry between the living and the dead and they used lanterns carved into a head from Parsnips on the window to frighten evil spirits. Americans now use pumpkins as they are easier to carve
It was celebrated down thru the years then when the Irish moved to America during the famine and subsequent years after they brought the festival over with them and Americans started to celebrate it and some rituals changed like for some apparent reason Trick or Treat came about
Although the Celts did dress in Masks in order to mimic the spirits as kids still do today although alot tend to go for fancy dress than dress as ghosts |

Oliver Cromwell killed around 40-45% percent of the catholic population of Ireland the english town of warrington has a statue of Cromwell at the end of its main high street. The provisional IRA picked Warrington as a target for terrorist bombing in 1993 and no one has ever considered that the statue may have been the reason for selection.
Goes to show ya really you can stick a rocket up an englishman's butt he still won't pay you any attention. |

Birthplace of brilliant writers e.g. James Joyce. Also birth place of Shane McGowan, The Pogues lead singer. Great Country, friendly people. Just a shame it's still politically divided between north and south.
Oops, I stand corrected - Shane McGowan was born in England.... never mind he's still Irish :-) |
