Car rental WITHOUT a credit card - possible?

Hi, I'm trying to organise a holiday for my parents and would like to rent them a car. However, every car rental service I've looked at seems to require the driver to have a credit card in their name so that a deposit can be blocked from the card. Obviously this is a problem as I am trying to arrange this holiday as a surprise! However, even if it weren't a surprise, the fact is that my dad doesn't have a credit card. Does anyone know of any car rental services (which operate in Ireland) which would accept a debit card or a cash deposit? It just seems ridiculous that people without credit cards are excluded from renting cars...

The only thing I can think of is a temp number. You can go into the bank and they give you a credit card number worth so much and when you use it that is. Say 500euro and that is all is in the slip.
It is not a card just a number.

Good Luck

Explain your situation to whichever car rental company. I dont have a credit card, nor would I even consider bringing one into my home. I do have laser though. try enterprise car rentals, they should be able to help you.

The problem is, people rent cars, and then damage them, etc. The car rental agency wants a credit card number because if you return a car that is damaged, then they will charge your card for the damages.

Most companies in the U.S.A. accept debit cards, however, unlike a credit card, you can't charge money to them if the money isn't in the account to back the transaction. So I can see a car rental agency refusing to accept a debit card.

Don't see any way around this. They all insist on a credit card for the obvious reasons.

Most car hire companies will accept a cash deposit ( fully refundable )
You need to ask eash one.

Try to contact the rent agency directly and explain the situation.

Will the drive have his credit card at the moment he will take the car. If so he can use it for the damage deposit.

Not really. That has become a standard part of the rental agreement, so as to to cover any damages.

You might need to arrange a large cash deposit to cover any eventuality.
