Chinese people in the Gaelteacht? |
We watched this short movie in Irish today called Yu Ming is ainm dom and it was about this Chinese boy who learns Irish so he can move here and then he gets here and he's like 'wtf?' He finds out about the Gaelteacht and then he moves there, I know it's just a movie but is there any truth in it? It is absolutely bizarre seeing a Chinese boy speak Irish |

Its about as likely as meeting Fr Jack Hackett in a pub in Dublin, but hey, this guy managed to do both.
I loved the DeNiro scene in the mirror, but nevermind, maybe I'm just sad.

Hmm... perhaps bizarre shouldn't be the word to describe about this 'uncommon' phenomenon. Regardless of ethnicity, everyone can speak different languages. Sometimes we are just surprised by how others (who are not part of our ethnic) group who can speak our language well.
That's the beauty of learning something different and expanding your mind. However, I'm sure as the 'chinese boy' grows older, he'll begin to question his identity as everyone struggles with it throughout their lives .
It's not a case about ethnicity or race... it's also about body image, gender, age, disability, education, financial status, religion, etc.
Sometimes we have to look back and ask ourselves... what has become of us? Are we any different than the people who are a part of our environment even if we look and act different?
Learn to question where you are and who you deal with on a daily basis. Learn to tell yourself that we shouldn't identify people based on their race or culture but rather their character.

I was in Kerry 3 weekends ago and we stopped at a petrol station near Rossbeigh. There was a Chinese guy working behind the deli counter. Some locals came in (buying ispĂnĂ if I remember correctly) and were having the craic with him partly through English, partly as Gaeilge, and his Irish was definitely better than mine. He was teaching them a couple of Chinese words too. Interculturalism in action. |

We remember seeing them in Father Ted, and that was Craggy Island so it isn't surprising to see them in the Gaeltacht. Sher wouldn't it be nice to have a Chinese Takeaway in deepest O'Cuivland?

just a random story about that movie:
i'm irish but lived for abroad for a few years, as a result i didn't have to learn irish when i moved back. i was watching that film in college when it came out and i had heard alot about it. it wasn't until after watching it and discussing it with a friend that i discovered "is anim dom" is how you say "my name is" in irish! i thought the whole title was chinese!!! boy did i feel silly!
hehehe
i've taken a few irish lessons since....!!!!!
great movie!! great idea!! i love that people want to learn irish and hopefully some day i'll speak it too! |
