Corporal punishment in the country?

I live in Dublin and most laws are obeyed, charges followed through etc, but one of my teachers from the country said that in small villages in the country corporal punishment is still used sometimes in the schools, is it true?

Your teacher is telling porkies. They wouldn't get away with that sort of thing anymore, whether it's in Ballymagash or Ballsbridge.

It was outlawed in 1984 but i still remember getting the odd swift kick well after that,
I once saw a nun punch a guy that was in the mid 90`s and in a secondary school.

Not since the early eighties - you'd have the bottom sued off you in a flash if you did. The only way teachers could get away with that would be if none of the other teachers knew about it and if they terrified the children enough not to say anything to their parents. That's child abuse, not corporal punishment. These things get out, and parents are much more aware of their rights and willing to challenge incompetent teachers nowadays than they were in the past. I'd be extremely surprised ifany teachers were still getting away with it. I've worked and done research in small-town & village schools for nearly five years and I've never come across a single attitude that would suggest that this sort of behaviour would be tolerated. Could your teacher be telling tall tales?

It's certainly not used in my home town & I've never heard of it being used in the surrounding villages. The last person that I know of receiving corporal punishment was a young lad at my primary school in the early eighties.

Maybe it was common practice in the village where your teacher grew up, which means either the children kept quiet about it or the parents condoned it's use.

Edit: having re-read everything, how old is your teacher? You might also want to bear in mind this teacher may never have taught in a country school & is telling tales from their childhood

If it was, or is used it would be against the Law, and whoever used it would be charged with assault.

I heard in some places, if a student does something awful. They have to take off their shirt/clothes in public, and get hit with a meter stick. This only applies to boys.
