Cost of living: Dublin v London? |
Can someone advise me on the cost of living in Dublin as compared with London? From looking at various ratings, I see that Dublin is not far behind London in terms of cost of living (sthg like, London is 2nd most expensive world city, whereas Dublin is 18th, or something). However, can someone put this in context for me? Dublin is obviously smaller, so I am presuming the premium I pay in London to be close to work in the centre would, in Dublin, be less (because EVERYWHERE is closer to the centre in Dublin). Other than that, is there anything I should watch out for? Forget about transport costs, because I refuse to buy a car or use public transport regularly (I have discovered the joys of cycle-commuting). Your thoughts please!
On a related question, how is the economy and employment situation in Dublin generally? It seems the UK is slipping into a recession, I assume Ireland is also? Additional Details spareleg, why would I go back to bed? It was morning in London when I asked the question. Not everyone lives in the US! The fact that the question was about the UK and Ireland might have been a clue.... |

Iv never lived in London but i go there a bit and I find food it much cheaper.
So are clothes.
But then other things like travel and cinema etc are more expensive.
But like you say if you have to live in the centre of London to be near your job its very expensive, whereas in Dublin you can commute from somewhere cheaper.
Not everyone likes a long commute though.
I think it evens out really.
The ecomoy is ona down turn though and its getting harder to find work.
My friend graduated last year and he went on to do a masters beace he didnt want o be unemployed.
About half the people he graduated with havent found work.
Some of them are working but only in the same minimum wage part time jobs they had in college.
Beofre most of the people I knew on the dole didnt really want a job now most of the people I know on it are really trying to find work but cant get any. |

Transport costs are defiantly cheaper in Dublin, both public transport and petrol prices.
The economy is ok, not as good as before. There is talk of a recession, and our government mustn't have one trained economist amongst them because they are talking about cut backs to public spending !! ???? So far the only area it has affected is the housing market, but the cost of housing was over inflated anyway.
What line of business do you work in? That might affect the job opportunities you are looking for. Ireland, like everywhere else in the Western economy is affected by greedy corporate giants 'outsourcing' to save for the short term.
I'll put a rental website up for you to compare housing. The lower the area code the closer the area is to the city, IE city centre is Dublin 1 & 2. The outer surburbs are Dublin 24 etc |

i have lived in both in the past two years and recently moved out of london to another uk city .the cost of living in both is the same eg food ,rent etc .so i think its just your personal preference on it .london public transport is much better than dublin as in london ou have the underground .if you are moving to dublin you can find jobs on fas.ie |
