I don't know the exact details of his proposals to Battman, but the gist of it is to move away from methods of teaching, learning and examination that rely on students 'learning off' phrases by rote with the sole purpose of being able to perform in the exams, and instead move towards methods that make Irish-learning up-to-date, relevant and interesting. The website games are one small example of the type of tools that could be used in classrooms which depart from old-fashioned ways of learning. The main focus would be on conversational fluency and a broad knowledge of everyday vocabulary, rather than on pieces of literature and strict grammatical correctness. The internet would be used to allow students to communicate with each other in more natural settings - like Bebo as Gaeilge. In other words, his suggestions are to make our knowledge of Irish more similar to our knowledge of English - something natural, informal, full of slang and hidden meanings, and, essentially, alive.
