Do I REALLY need a passport to go to Ireland from England?
I was planning a trip to Ireland with my boyfriend with the little money that we have, and we have just found out both our passports ran out this month. We both live in England but can't really afford the £70+ fee for a passport renewal....is there any way we can chance it with just our driving licences? (they're both only provisionals)
"A common travel area is in existence between Ireland and the UK (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man). There is no formal agreement between Ireland and UK regarding the common travel area and it is not provided for in legislation. The first legal recognition of the common travel area between Ireland and the UK is contained in the Treaty of Amsterdam.

you are not legally obliged to have one if you are a citizen of the UK
because of a long standing agreement between our countries
bring something else though (driving license) BOTH OF YOU

You do not need a passport to fly to the Republic of Ireland from the UK, driving license will get you there.

If you have a driving licence you'll be fine. Just carry something with a pic on it.

It is entirely dependent on whether your airline or ferry company require a passport.
i.e. if you could swim then you do not need a passport but some airlines will not let you on plane without passport.
Trust me I'm a Doctor ♥
If you are travelling to Northern Ireland you don't need ID but you do need valid photo ID to travel from the UK to the Republic of Ireland by plane or ferry. If your provisional licences have your photographs then thats OK, if not you definitely won't be allowed to fly without valid photo ID, you could risk the ferry but thats up to you, they always check my ID at the port when I travel over on the ferry.
BTW the Republic of Ireland is very expensive to visit at the moment because of the rate of the £ against the Euro. Everything costs far more than in the UK (apart from fuel) so if you haven't much money you might be wasting your time visiting at the moment. My parents just came over to visit me from the UK and couldn't believe how much everything costs.
cancun
valid picture id would do
or just take the bus from NI
good luck

No, I wouldn't risk it. But you could take the ferry to Northern Ireland and try sneaking over the border into the Republic.
