You will not require a passport. There is no border control between the two states. It's a motorway, and you won't even know you have crossed over the border until you realise that the speed limits in the Republic are in Kilometres. The speed limit is 120 km/hr. The signposts are in Dual language and destinations are in kilometres.
Dublin is shown as Baile Atha Cliath.
Do bring your drivers licence, with photo ID.
Wait to fill up in the Republic as the petrol is slightly cheaper.

If you are from outside the EU you might need a visa and your passport

You should always carry some form of photo ID, and the passport is the handiest, but I suppose a driver's licence with do.

Mackem
It would be an idea to have it with you or some form of photo ID. I have driven from N Ireland to S Ireland without ID, but if you get stopped by the Garda then having ID would be a bonus!

scholzmik
whenever you travel to another country you shoul always have a passport with you but if mean do you need it at the border than no you don't have to show it to anyone at the border between n. ireland and ireland

If you drive the hire car then your Driving Licence would be essential, your passport could be useful.
