It depends on your nationality but we are English and have been over to Ireland by ferry from Holyhead to Dublin around five times now and we have never been asked for our passports, although we do take them with us, and we also have our photographic driving licences with us.
BTW, it's not really the done thing to call Ireland Southern Ireland...it is either Ireland or the Republic of Ireland. |

It depends on your citizenship.
Citizens of Great Britain, Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands require a government issued photo ID like the driver's license.
Citizens of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland may travel on their government issued national ID cards.
All others need passports.

No, you should have some photographic identification with you though. |
|

the one and only :)

I've been on a ferry from dublin to holyhead numerous times and have never been asked for any form of ID. Although, I always bring some with me just in cause. Better to be safe than sorry :) |

technically you only need some photographic identification (if you're an EU citizen if not you need a passport) but you'd be better off bringing your passport as some ferry staff will insist you can't get on without it and it's just too much effort. |
|

OMG
 |
Yes but you don't need to show the photo if you have a irish or british passport. |

A photo ID should be sufficient. |

If you are a British citizen, you only need to provide some form of ID but many of the ferry companies recommend taking either your passport or a driver's licence with a photo.
If you are not a British or Irish citizen, you will need to carry your passport. |

I do not believe that you would need a passport. If you are already in Ireland, no matter which way you travel you should not need one. If the ferry, flight, or anything else goes to another destination in between it may be likely. But to my knowledge, you do not need one: ). |
