Yes you do, to reach the North of the country leave from Waterford and take the ferry up to Belfast. The middle of Ireland is a fierce dangerous place and if best to be avoided if at all possible..

err, there is no northern ireland, no republic ireland, just ireland,,northern ireland is an artificial state, republic of ireland is some kind of remnant status from french revolution influence created by an american who became president and fulfilled his own egotistic dream.........

Take the Train from Dublins Connolly Station and go 90 Miles to the North which will take you over the Border Line there is no actual Border Post anymore. Or you can get a Bus to Dundalk and Walk over into Newery .
