No but you will need photo ID. NB if you are travelling with Ryanair you need a passport. Aer lingus only require photo ID. By boat only photo ID is needed.

sue elle
Not nessesarily but if you are flying you will need some sort of photo ID, either your passport or a photo drivers licence.

Pyro
Nah, Im always hopping on the stena line from Dublin over to Hollyhead they do prefer a passport but if you only have photo id they'd probably still let ya.

Orla C
Of course you do. You can sort it all out through the local post office. Get cracking.

Care Bear
Your nationality?

A common travel area is in existence between Ireland and the UK (including the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man).

The Common Travel Area means that there are no passport controls in operation for Irish and UK citizens travelling between the two countries.

You must, however, carry an acceptable form of photo-identification:
A - driver's licence
B - national ID card
C - Garda ID

Only if you're going with Ryanair

Yes. It is for identification purposes only though and although you wont require it for leaving the country, you will most likely have to show it as a form of id when returning. My husband is an hgv driver and has occasional work in Ireland. He didn't take his passport on one occasion and they wouldn't let him back through the docks to start his return journey home. I had to fax over a copy to the docks office before they would let him move. Take it with you just to be 100% certain that you're getting back into the country and not encountering problems.

It's all very well giving me 2 thumbs downs - I'm telling you what happened by personal experience.
