Do You Have A Problem With Abortion In Ireland? |
I was watching the news earlier and they were doing the usual two sided take on the subject should we shouldn't, why we should why we shouldn't etc....
And to be honest I don't really have a problem with it. If were honest we all know at least 2 or 3 people that have gone over to England and had it done. So why shouldn't we do it here, because it's going on anyway. Additional Details Tommy I see your point and you are right, but to be honest how many girls do you know that are thinking of having abortions have not given it proper thought and consideration, I think that if it's something that you feel isn't right for you then fair enough. |

I very strongly believe in the right of women to choose.
I remember only to well the X case...what a disgrace.
But, I definitely believe in a time frame within which a woman is allowed to abort.
A very valid point was made in another answer, referring to women who have 'taken the boat' and then in the event of further complications on their return feel afraid to mention that they have aborted. |

No, I don't. It is down to individuals to make their own decisions about what they should & should not do.
There are women who have abortions who don't think it through, there are some who feel they have no option. By stigmatising abortion in this country, we're making it difficult for women who have had abortions to access the medical support & counselling when they return home, because it's also illegal to leave the state to procure an abortion, some of these women are reluctant to come forward when they need help. |

I'm pro choice, but on a personal level its not for me,
i dont think it something that will be legal here anytime in the near future |

The reason why we don't have it is because of the church and the right-wing radical organisations like CHOIR and Libertas(Don't let them fool you, behind Ganley is a bunch of radical, right-wing, Jesus pumping lunys that would give the like of Le Pen and the BNP a run for their money!) These organisations want to force us to live in accordance on how they see fit and on what they deem to be right. In my opinion, their is no place in ireland for these people, if they want to live in a country were they can have their views forced onto other people i advise them to move to another country with similar ideologies, like North Korea for example. Abortion is a difficult subject, what we need on the subject is honest, fair open debate. However, this will never happen as the right wing and the church are too extreme on the matter in this country. If you can remember, the last time we had the referendum on abortion, the tactics the pro-lifers and the church used were sickening and disgusting. And it is because of this that we won't have another referendum on the matter for quiet some time. My own personnel view on abortion is irrelevant. But i believe it is up to the individual woman, to make that decision. I don't think the church, the government or anyone else has the right to force/influence her decision, (except maybe the father of course(influence that is, not force her now!....).
In conclusion, the reason why we don't have a referendum here on it, even though it would probably pass, is because everyone can remember the disgusting and extreme tactics that the church and right wing went to last time; that nobody wants to see a thing like that again happen in our country for a long time.
(Also, more importantly, the political party's realise this, and it would be political suicide to do so, and that is why they don't call for one!) |

Yeah I think it should be legalised. Everyone has a right to choose, just because it's available doesn't mean it will happen. It's just like all those people who go nuts if condoms are made available at schools. Giving someone a condom does not make them have sex, giving someone the choice to terminate a pregnancy, doesn't mean they'll get pregnant just to exercise their right to that choice. |

I am definitely Pro - Life. I know I'm gonna get loads of thumbs down.. but anyways..
Seeing some of the stories here, i have obviously been very naiive because i never thought like teen pregnancies were a big deal here. I don't know anyone who went throught that..
But i am Pro Life. Human foetus'/embryos are technically persons and have the right to live! I see it almost as a form of murder.
20 weeks after fertilization a fetus can feel pain! I may onluy be 16 but i do feel strongly about this issue |

I don't personally agreee with abortion but I also don't agree with forcing a raped or ill woman to give birth. The problem is if you only legalise it for those instances then you will have people making false cries of rape and ruining the lives of innocent men. So it has to be either fully legal or illegal. I would therefore have to say that abortion should be legal in Ireland once the person has passed a psychological evaluation. |

But if its legalised here it will happen on a much bigger scale
So many women choose abortion as an easy way out. Go out get drunk and sleep with random strangers and then take the easy solution of getting abortion. These women could do with a bit of responsibility in their lives to grow up. I'm sick of going out at weekend seeing classy girls puking their guts up and dressing like prostitutes and feeling what they are doing is ok. I'm speaking about 3 girls whom i'm friendly enough with and act like this every weekend. Needless to say 2 out of the 3 have had abortions in England
I have another friend who at the age of 14 had a kid. She said had she had the money she def would have had an abortion. It frightens her now the fact she was thinking bout killing her now 6 year old daughter who turned her life around and is the joy of it At 14 it wasn't easy havin a kid but she now has a college degree and training to be an accountant and worked her whole way thru college.
Simply I would hate to see it come in.
P.S I'm not excusing men for their drunken behaviour either but it easy for them to avoid responsibility when really they need something to kick some sense into them aswel!!!
EDIT: I'm not saying Girls dont give it proper thought they do but just because something isn't right now doesn't mean it wont work out for the better in the future and thats my point If a girl gets pregnant maybe its fate and who are we to mess with fate. Sorry but I think its wrong to have an abortion unless having the pregnancy runs a risk to the Mothers health |

well i live in america and its legal here, however, am against it. am pro-life but you know you can only get some words across to someone's head, so its everyone's decision at the end. I had the oportunitty but you know its not the babies fault its the parents fault for taking stupid decisions, right now i have a beautiful 2 month baby and dont know what i would do without him. I'd probably be all out of love. |

I'm for it. I believe its up to the woman to choose for herself. Each "abortionee" I would imagine would choose this form not as lightly as tommy put it, I seriously doubt its used as a form of contraception, but more to rectify a mistake made. It is unfortunate that any woman would have to go through such a harrow experience, and a very valid point made by another answerer, is the after care in Ireland. "Drunken mistakes" I would imagine are only a small fraction of the percentage of abortions. The act of Abortion doesn't come easy....I certainly wouldn't fancy it, but if I had to, I would consider it. Considering the countries state at the moment, we probably will get it, and the Government will tax the shyte out of it. |

I think the problem is not abortion as such, but the fact that people are not properly informed about what they can do to protect themselves from an unplanned pregnancy, and worse. Young people having sex without protecting themselves are making an uninformed decision - and yes, alcohol and drugs can play a part.
There isn't enough awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex. Pregnancy is just one result of unprotected sex, there are many others which are far far worse. Having lived in the Netherlands, a country which is generally quite open as regards sexuality, if you look at the statistics of that country of unplanned pregnancies among teenagers and young people, you'll see that the number of young Dutch women who experience unplanned pregnancies is way below that of the UK and Ireland - this is because it is DRUMMED INTO THEM: Safe sex or no sex. It's on the television, the Internet, posters are everywhere, they are actively taught how to protect themselves from STD infection and unplanned pregnancy.
If you have unprotected sex, an unplanned pregnancy could be the least of your worries. There is still no cure for AIDS, remember. And AIDS is in Ireland also. |

Well I don't know 2 or three girls who have gone to England! I think people should take responsibility for themselves and their baby if they choose to have unprotected sex. However I think there should be exceptions made for rape victims and underage girls.
Btw there WAS a referendum a few years ago. I doubt public opinion has changed that much since then. |

We should have the choice. End of. Let the woman herself choose.
It's illegal on both sides of the border BUT - why do I have to pay the same for my health insurance as people in the rest of the UK when I can't have an abortion in Northern Ireland? |

yes its murder!the baby is already growin when its aborted |

I think it should be legalized but only for certain cases like if someone was raped or if the child is severally disabled or wont survive or if it threatens the mothers health or if the parents are very young like sixteen or under.
other than this its still a life, if the babies unwanted well then the parents should have thought of that before having unprotected sex, there's enough sex education out there in schools and the media and i understand that accidents can still happen and it can happen to the best of us, but there's other options out there like adoption.
abortion could be used as a contraception, and encouraging some people to have unprotected sex because they know they can just have an abortion and problem solved.
i understand that allot of people become pregnant and don't realize till its to late to get the morning after pill, and there either not ready or there to young or there not financially able or what ever the situation, but it is still a life. |
