OK
Lots of answers and the truth lies in all and most of them.
In law you do not need a passport to enter the Irish Republic if you are travelling from the UK and you are a UK citizen.
This is an arrangement between the UK and the Republic of Ireland (not really known as southern Ireland)
You do however need to carry a recognised piece of photo ID.
This is much easier if you have a passport but a driving licence is probably OK.
Please check with whoever you are travelling as they may have rules that are different.
So even though by law you may not require a passport an airline can still insist that you have one in order to identify yourself.
Good luck and enjoy your stay. |

Well, it depends where you are flying from.
Also, quite often you need to show your passport even for internal flights, if you have bought your ticket over the Internet ans it's an electronic ticket. |

It depends on the airline actually. Ryanair: definitely! BMI, not always, could be a domestic flight. Do you have an EU ID card? That is accepted too. |

I went to Southern Ireland on a ferry from Swansea and I took no ID and was not asked for ID on the out trip or on the way back, so No you don't but it would be a good idea to take some form of ID with you.
It may be worth you getting an E111 from the post office, so that if you landed up in hospital then your covered.
Enjoy your trip. |

From Northern Ireland you will not need any form of ID. On most roads there is not even a border check.
From Mainland Britain you do not officially need a passport, but a lot of carriers will require an official form of ID, such as a passport or driving license. Ask whoever you are travelling with for their requirements.
To come from the rest of the EU you will need a passport.
To come from the rest of the world you will need a passport and if you are not an EU citizen, a visa. |

What a silly question. Southern Ireland is the likes of Wexford, waterford andCork.
There is a country called Northern Ireland but none called Southern Ireland. |

If you are in the UK then no - its classed as a domestic flight
To anyone that says you do can you read?:
"UK citizens do not require a passport or visa to enter Ireland"
