At the moment no, you do not need a passport if you go by ferry, but you do need photo id if flying...you would do to most places even within the UK. We have been to Ireland by ferry a few times the last being 2007. We always take our passports and have never had to show them, although we have been told that the laws are changing and that sometime soon we will have to show them. We are going again in September and will certainly be taking them as usual.

Edit
I should add that I am referring to The Republic of Ireland.

If you go to the Republic of Ireland you need a passport as it is a separate country. If you go to Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK, you do not necessarily need a passport, although if you travel by plane you might still need one for security.

Yes you do its the best form of Id and a lot of airlines will not let you fly without

no you dont rod, i am english but live in ireland. we share a common travel area policy and you are not required to use a passport, some airlines will ask for photo id such as a driving license but you definitley do not need a passport.

If you fly to northern ireland you need a passport or driving licence, you can drive from northern ireland to the Republic of Ireland and back again without any need for a passport. If you fly to ireland contat the airline and they will let you know.

You definetly, absolutely do not need a passport to fly to the UK but you will need some type of official documentation with your photo on it.

I, Candy
Best to take that. I'm flying from Inverness, Scotland to London next week and I'm taking mine

Technically - no, as both countries still have a common travel free zone, however, this is being abolished in 2009. However, in practice though, you do, as passports are checked in airports, seaports etc. That said, ryanair may still allow you to travel to the UK from Ireland (and vice versa) with a student card, you may wish to check their website to verify. However, in practice, its best to always have your passport with you.

Why When How
only if you fly

it depends who you are flying with.. if its ryanair you just need some sort of proof of id with a photo such as driving licence or passport. it will say on the airline website.

Yes for the Republic of Ireland,

Yes to southern ireland as it is a foreign country no to Northern Ireland as it is part of the Uk.

La La
simple answer is: yes

Ted
no North Ireland is fine it is in the Briish Isles. - you can get the ferry there without the need for a passport.

you need one to go to south ireland [The Republic of Ireland] because they fought for independance from the United Kingdom and won it in about 1930.
