No, Southern Ireland and the UK are both parts of the EU and have agreed open boarders. You will be required to carry an official ID card, like a passport.

"Flying between the United Kingdom and Ireland
As the United Kingdom and Ireland forms a common travel area, it is not necessary for the nationals of those two countries to carry a passport when travelling between the two.

However, for their own administrative purposes, some airlines flying between the UK and Ireland require all their passengers to have some form of photographic identity when checking in.

Passengers are strongly advised to check with their airline, before flying, on exactly what their individual requirements are."

No you don't. Use a driving licence or other form of picture ID. I did it all the time and had no problem from any airline. As for bill w what would he know? He's probably never been. Go it's a lovely place.

no

No, you can use a driver's licence. I did it one. However, check that your airline doesn't require a passport to validate your tickets.

kirrii
No. A passport is not needed only a valid form of ID. I bring my passport because it is really one of the best forms of ID but there have always been special relations between Ireland and the UK even before the EU got together and no passport was ever needed. Remember too that some airlines are more strict than others regarding what "valid" means. My friend was refused a Ryanair flight with a form of ID that had always been accepted by BMI.

If you are flying, check with the airline. Some require a passport for ID purposes.

There is no such country as 'Southern Ireland' - please do not call it that, or Éire, unless you are speaking in Irish. The name of the country is 'Ireland'.

snetterton
Yes. It's a foreign country, believe it or not.

ems dublin
Its called Ireland!!!!!!! or the republic of ireland not southern ireland

Anne K T
If you are flying from Britain, Yes of course you do, the Republic of Ireland is a different country so you therefore need a passport if flying there. If you are flying to Northern Ireland (within the UK) and then driving into Republic you can get away with it.

I know for definite that if you are flying with Ryanair between the UK and Ireland, they will accept either a passport or photocard driving licence. This is only if you are British. But you should check with the airline or ferry service you are travelling with, as some may only accept passports.

yes, it is a different country after all, Northern Ireland, no you don't.
