You do NOT need a passport to travel between the UK and RoI (you can just drive back and forward between Northern Ireland, which is in the UK, and the Republic without even noticing you've crossed a border - all this stuff about it being a different country etc does not apply in this case). HOWEVER, you WILL need a passport or photo identification such as a driving licence to board an aircraft or a boat, so you need to check with your transport provider what their requirements are.

the answer is no if you are british i travel there often as my friend lives there and i always use my photo driving license.

you can travel from Ireland to the U.K with a driving licence as I.D. so I'm sure it works the same way from U.K to Ireland?

I assume you are British. If so, in theory no, in reality yes. In the EU, as a member you can travel between Member States with only your ID card. But, as (unlike the rest of Europe) we don't have them, the only accepted from of ID is a passport.

I quote from the relevant authority: "All Union citizens have the right to enter another Member State by virtue of having an identity card or valid passport. Under no circumstances can an entry or exit visa be required. Where the citizens concerned do not have travel documents, the host Member State must afford them every facility in obtaining the requisite documents or having them sent."

Given that this is THE definitive answer, it is difficult to imagine why some MORON has given it the thumbs down. There is no point giving sensible advice on here if such imbeciles decry it.

No. As far as I know, if u are British u dont need a passport to travel to Ireland, but u do need some sort of photo ID (e.g. drivers license). That used to be the case anyway. They may have changed it.

technically no - but as the u.k does not issue official photo identification (unlike say, germany) you have to travel with your passport.

I have a feeling you don't need a passport to travel between Ireland and UK but I always use one regardless so not sure.
If in doubt I bet you can travel to Belfast without one and just get a train to the Republic

yes, republic of ireland is a different country, they use euros there, making it a european country outside the uk.
