You can get them in the North but you'll have to secret them about your person when you're coming into the Republic. Now be careful where you put them because if one of them goes off by accident and it's somewhere intimate you might never sit down again for the rest of your life...... |

you can buy fireworks at Jonesborough market (co. armagh), or other places without a license, but the closer it gets to halloween the more the possibility the gardai will be out close to the border with a checkpoint looking for people with fireworks. I got caught about 2 years ago, they were stopping cars at random close to the carrickdale hotel, and unfortnately I got stopped and the car was searched, I only had about £20 worth of fireworks in the car and I got fined 1,000 Euro for them. |

You don't need a license to buy them but they are illegal to import into the Republic without a permit. The people who put on the firework shows at New Year etc. get a permit from the police.
There is a warehouse outlet just over the border where you can buy them, and take your chances, but I believe that the Irish cops have an unmarked car sitting watching the movements of the shoppers. When they see you loading up big quantities into your car, they radio your car registration number to their cop friends in the south and you get stopped and they are confiscated.
Mostly they only watch out for dealers who will resell them at a huge profit but they occasionally catch the family shopper as well,
Do you want to take a chance ? It's up to you ! |

It is legal for anyone over a certain age (I think it was recently increased from 18 to 21), however importing them into the south without a licence can get you five years in jail. You can also get 5 years for setting them off (while you might be able to hide the import, you can't hide setting them off), even if you do it in your own garden.
If you can wait a month until you want them, you can apply for a licence, but there is no guarantee you'll get one.
