I managed without one a few years ago but to be safe I'd bring some form of photo id with you.
Check with the Ferry Company or Dublin Port's website might have some info. Any other port in the Republic should have the same restrictions as them.

No you do not. The United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland form a Common Travel Area together with the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, which is much older than the EU and the Schengen Zone (indeed it's why neither country is part of the Schengen Area - the UK doesn't want to be, and the Republic can't be while the UK isn't, as it wants to keep the open border with Northern Ireland). Check what the requirements of the ferry company are, though.
"Is this Google Answers??" is wrong on both points - there is only free travel within the EU within the Schengen Zone (which includes some non-EU countries, and within the EU doesn't include the UK and Ireland), and separately within the Common Travel Area - you need a passport to cross between Schengen and the CTA.

I don't think you need a PASSPORT as such, but you will probably need to have some form of ID with you.

you dont need one. ireland and the UK have an agreement that allows people to go from one to the other without a passport.
but make the most of it - that agreement is due to end in 2009/2010 and westminster for some reason doesnt want to renew it. something to do with security id say

You will need a passport for Ireland, but not for wales/england/scotland trips.
