Christine

Do you feel these people are really respecting the Irish? or using us for their own political aims?

http://www.ireland.com/

Am I the only one who finds it mildly offensive that some eejit decides to dress up as a leprechaun (see picture, no. 772) to allegedly support our recent vote in the Lisbon treaty.
Additional Details
I am Irish, and I don't feel proud that some fascists decided to like us for a change, while deriding us at the same time.

The whole thing is making me sick. I wasn't sure what to vote and just last minute choose No. I completely regret it and wish I voted Yes, I know it wouldn't have made a difference but I just feel that Yes vote would have been good for Ireland. All these countries are saying we are now 'friends' because of the way we voted. And as for your question, yes I agree, the rest of Europe are laughing at us for the way things turned out! Some of the countries feel that we are some sort of allie to them now!

The country should have been more educated about the treaty, many people vote No when they are confused and worried about the outcome (this should have never happened, no wonder most of the country didn't turn up on the day to vote).

If we'd voted yes those feckin eejits wouldn't have reason to dress up as leprechauns.

In the words of the great WB, (we're paraphrasing..)

ONCE AGAIN WE HAVE DISGRACED OURSELVES!

I find it kind of offensive. We are not leprechauns!! They don't even exist! Have you ever noticed that if there is an Irish person in a cartoon they make him/her sound like a lerprechaun? I think its so annoying.

I find it mildly amusing that some sad people actually view us Irish in this way, I feel sorry for them

Well, actually, here in America our TV programs portray the Irish as easily angered drunkards or old fishermen in knit sweaters. Not everyone falls for that generalization, but some do.

On behalf of America, I apologize.

IT does get very frustrating after awhile. Every single programme on tv these days has a reference to us and portrays us as a nation of alcoholics and clumsy so and so's

oh how the times have changed....

the daily mail... (the most anti-irish newpaper in britain) now has an irish version

the BNP noted for its anti-irish history passed a leaflet through my door in london declaring its love of the irish and willingness to protect our culture... (i nearly lost my lunch)

we are being used by certain sections (the political right and indeed far right) across europe but its still doesn't change the fact that we voted no and to be honest we need these people on our side at the moment to stop us from being bullied into a yes

Sure aren't we a slick fast paced IT country

I think that you are missing a very serious and scary point, all countries had to agree to the Lisbon treaty for it to go through, Europe, as soon as the Irish voted NO, just turned round and said lets continue anyway, without people making points like this and getting their point across and into the news then Europe will just railroad its way ahead. I think that the Irish people should be more offended that all the other European countries are just continuing with ratifying the Lisbon treaty as if Ireland had voted yes. It is disgraceful. Before this vote I had little time for the Irish but now I have a new respect for them, standing up for what is right. If you are Irish yourself, don't be insulted be proud.

Trixie Bordello
Point 1, The Irish reject the Lisbon treaty. The EU mafia say we'll ignore that.

Point 2, The people of Zimbabwe reject Mugabe. Mugabe says I'll reject that.

See the connection?

I can't believe someone answered and said the following 'Before this vote I had little time for the Irish but now I have a new respect for them, standing up for what is right. If you are Irish yourself, don't be insulted be proud'

Its the ultra right stance and 'support' these people are suddenly giving Ireland that is making me for one feel sick to the stomach. If an Irish person said the above about an English person they'd get so many violations and reports their account would be suspended. The actual cheek of him, hes as bad as those patronising gobshites from the British freedom whatever party.

Of course they are using you for their own aims. Every country is looking out for itself - even Ireland (for example - the no vote itself)

Generic cultural stereotyping is always annoying. Just don't let it get to you. I am sure you know some offensive stereotypes about Americans, no? I just love being called fat and dumb all the time myself..or plastic. It happens to every nationality. Take it with a grain of salt and move on.

Didn't you know that all us Irish people are leprechauns with ginger hair and say "top of tha mornin to ya..."
